Attention all writers, filmmakers, composers, indie film audiences, colleagues, and friends of Moondance, internationally: In honor of freedom of speech and a strong belief in dynamic artistic expression, the Moondance International Film Festival continues to entertain, educate, reach out, nurture, inspire, award, recognize, promote equality and non-violent conflict resolution, and to encourage talented, creative voices around the world to freely express positive and productive projects in any medium. We actively promote and support non-violent conflict resolution and seek viable alternatives to solving conflicts.

  • Moondance promotes, encourages, educates and rewards non-violent conflict resolution in the arts & film. Our much-coveted Columbine Awards are given to the film-makers &/or writers who best depict alternatives to violence as a method of dealing with conflicts, whether personal, local, national or international, and/or show why violence as a solution to conflict is ultimately counter-productive and inhumane. Our mission is to present a vibrant and growing collection of films and writings, which is an ideal means for communication across perceived boundaries of race, culture, age and gender.
  • Our objective is to identify and address, through films, writing & music, the root causes of violence and contribute to the just and peaceful transformation of violent conflict resolution. The core of conflict transformation work is the building of a sustainable peace between all people. This involves a process of profound change in attitude, transforming situations characterized by fear and killing into environments in which reconciliation, respect for other people, social justice and participatory democracy can take root.

THE MOONDANCE COLUMBINE AWARD PROJECT HAS AS ITS GOAL:

  • Facilitating dialogue at different levels and sectors of society in conflict.
  •  Encouraging and motivating the international community to address the structural causes of conflict.
  • Generating international awareness for the issues and concerns arising out of our work and through the written works and films honored at Moondance, and created by young people, men and women
  • Opening up an on-going dialogue with creative people on how non-violent conflict resolution can be accomplished and promoted throughout the international entertainment industry.
  • Cultivating an awareness of solutions to violent conflict resolution, honoring creative diversity, developing an intercultural dialogue, and stimulating this creative resource.

THE MOONDANCE COLUMBINE AWARD PROJECT PROPOSES TO:

  • Raise global awareness of women’s experiences and perspectives of peace and conflict.
  • Help women better realize their potential as peace-builders, from the village to the national and international level.
  • Affect the international film and television industry, as well as the publishing and  music industry, specifically targeting those entities to motivate them to generously fund and produce films, publications, projects and shows which depict viable alternatives to violent conflict resolution.
  • Acknowledge the potentially powerful roles writers, filmmakers and composers can play in securing peace.
  • Gain a greater commitment by the international film community toward depictions of non-violent conflict resolutions.

A MOONDANCER WRITES US:

“Your treatise on directors actually directing actors (January 18 Moondance blog), in addition to all the other directorial skills and duties, is in my view the most important page in the instructional manual. Your scintillating exploration of the interpersonal essentials from director to actor and from each actor to all others in any film of quality is easily the most moving and comprehensive I ever read anywhere. This should be required reading at every film school on the planet.”

A team of scientists, in a groundbreaking analysis of data from hundreds of sources, has concluded that humans are on the verge of causing unprecedented damage to the oceans and the animals living in them.

“We may be sitting on a precipice of a major extinction event,” said Douglas J. McCauley, an ecologist at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and an author of the new research, which was published on Thursday in the journal Science. But there is still time to avert catastrophe, Dr. McCauley and his colleagues also found.

There are clear signs already that humans are harming the oceans to a remarkable degree, the scientists found. Some ocean species are certainly overharvested, but even greater damage results from large-scale habitat loss, which is likely to accelerate as technology advances the human footprint, the scientists reported. Coral reefs, for example, have declined by 40 percent worldwide, partly as a result of climate-change-driven warming. Read More
