IN MEMORIAM:

JOSEPH CONSENTINO

Moondance Award-winning documentary filmmaker & workshop presenter

Longtime Moondance award-winning filmmaker, workshop presenter, friend and mentor, Joseph Consentino, passed from this journey to another on Friday, January 19, 2018.

After graduating from St. John’s and Columbia Universities with degrees in journalism, Joe became a photojournalist for Saturday Evening Post, Look Magazine and Sports illustrated. His photographs have been celebrated in numerous books, collections and exhibits including a portrait of Edward Steichen, which resides at the Museum of Modern Art. Joe endeavored to add greater dimension to his lens by telling stories through documentary film making, and a new chapter began.

Together with Sandra (film editor and producer) Joe created Consentino Films Inc. and Big Bear Films, LLC. They honed their craft with respectful dignity, winning several Emmy Awards, and were nominated for an Academy Award.

Through the Ridgefield Playhouse Film Society, which Joe founded, evenings were spent enjoying films and interesting Q&As with actors and directors. Their respect for Joe made them want to participate and educate us as an audience. These events provided a window into the work and tenacity necessary to bring movie magic to life.

Another “major” passion of Joe’s was baseball. Upon graduating from St. John’s University, he was drafted by the Boston Red Sox organization and played for several seasons before an injury ended his career. After moving to Ridgefield and starting a family, Joseph applied his baseball acumen to the small diamond – coaching hundreds of young children in the Ridgefield Little League. As his players progressed through high school he started the town’s first travel baseball team – the Ridgefield Nighthawks American Legion team.

In 2003, Joe, along with George Foster (former Cincinnati Reds and NY Mets All-Star), took his love for the sport one “diamond” further by founding the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL). Joe’s goal was to give student athletes a better chance to have their talents recognized by Major League scouts. Since its inception, over 135 NECBL alumni have played in the Major Leagues.

Joe’s family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to: www.gofundme.com/joseph-consentino-memorial-fund All funds received will be used to sponsor a major improvement for an existing Ridgefield Little League ball-field in Joseph’s honor.

ADVICE FROM A TREE

By Ilan Shamir

Stand tall and proud

Sink your roots deeply into the Earth

Reflect the light of a greater source

Think long-term , Go out on a limb

Remember your place among all living beings

Embrace with joy the changing seasons

For each yields its own abundance:

The Energy and Birth of Spring

The Growth and Contentment of Summer

The Wisdom to let go of leaves in the Fall

The Rest and Quiet Renewal of Winter

Feel the wind and the sun
, And delight in their presence

Look up at the moon that shines down upon you

And the mystery of the stars at night.

Seek nourishment from the good things in life

Simple pleasures: Earth, fresh air, light

Be content with your natural beauty

Drink plenty of water

Let your limbs sway and dance in the breezes

Be flexible

Remember your roots

Enjoy the view!

WHY FILM FESTIVALS MATTER:

Excerpts from the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA)

Film festivals are a vital piece of the film ecosystem, and their impact is evident across our culture. Film festivals highlight the worldwide passion of cinema and showcase the value of film, both creatively and economically. More than anything, film festivals deliver a new, unique way to experience the movies, always driven by the power of a good story.

A platform for new talent:
Each year, filmmakers submit their creations to a range of film festivals in the hopes of getting their work premiered. If a film attracts the attention of festival curators, an independent creator could have their work showcased in front of an influential audience. Film festivals have helped open doors for many of today’s iconic filmmakers including Quentin Tarantino, Morgan Spurlock and Darren Aronofsky.

Attracting new audiences:
When a new or independent filmmaker brings a film to a festival, the viewers have the opportunity to connect with the story through experiencing the film firsthand. This process can give the filmmaker insights and even unlock new avenues for the film with producers, distributors, and others who can bring it to a wider audience. READ MORE HERE!

INSIDER TIPS FOR SCREENWRITERS:

Discover how to: enhance the narrative momentum in your screenplay, stylize your script in a way that keeps the narrative moving, open your story in a way that generates instant momentum and audience investment, create a sense of inevitability in your screenplay, utilize the importance of cause and effect and conflict in narrative, and the importance of tailoring specific characters & dialog to the story, as well as structuring each scene so as to build or maintain a vital sense of story progression, and to keeping your story perpetually engaging.

We all really appreciate your support of the film (and my previous film) and all of the exposure it will receive through Moondance and the award!  It’s a great honor. Thank you!!” ~ Jeannie Donohoe, director: (“GAME” won the 2017 Moondance, and her “LAMBING SEASON” is another previous Moondance Winner)

• “I want you to know that I have huge respect for your film festival and I’m so grateful for the selection of my film. I’m so supportive of your mission as a festival and want to contribute, if possible, even if in some small way.” ~ Jenna Cavelle, director, “OPEN SEASON” a Moondance 2017 winning short narrative film.

THE UNRULY MYSTIC: SAINT HILDEGARD

Feature documentary film, directed by Michael M. Conti (USA)

Discover why Saint Hildegard is considered to be the patron saint of creativity, and about her continued impact today. This 12th-century abbess became famous as a Christian Mystic and visionary, as well as a musical composer and writer, and whose natural medicine is still practiced in Europe today. Saint Hildegard is venerated around the world for her widely recognized impact on today’s theologians, artists, musicians, the medical profession, and educators. The film is an homage to her, but is also a call to all of us, to listen, to still ourselves and to heed the call of our souls and whatever unruly messages exist within. The filmmaker traveled internationally to capture many of the stories you will see in this beautifully visual, memorable and inspiring film. The film evokes a calling: that sweet spot of creativity that we all yearn to discover and utilize, an inherent desire, which is also deeply spiritual in nature. (65 Minutes) Available in English, German, Spanish and Japanese

WHAT IT’S REALLY LIKE TO BE A WOMAN IN HOLLYWOOD

What we see in movies matters: it affects our hobbies, our career choices, our emotions and even our identities. Right now, we don’t see enough women on screen or behind the camera — but waiting for Hollywood to grow a conscience isn’t going to fix the problem, says Naomi McDougall Jones. Join forces with her as she outlines her four-point plan for a total representation revolution in Hollywood. WATCH HERE: TED TALKS

GEENA DAVIS: THIS IS A WATERSHED MOMENT IN HOLLYWOOD

Sexism has been “entrenched” in Hollywood since its inception, but the industry has hit a turning point as men join women in their outrage over recent allegations of rampant sexual harassment and assault, says Academy Award-winning actor Geena Davis. “I do think this is a watershed moment and what’s going to be different about it now is not just women supporting women. It’s that men needed to become involved…So that is what will make the difference. We can’t just talk amongst ourselves and fix it. We have to have partners,” Davis said.

SEXISM IN HOLLYWOOD

Where are all the women and girls in film? Social scientist Stacy Smith analyzes how the media under-represents and portrays women — and the potentially destructive effects those portrayals have on viewers. She shares hard data behind gender bias in Hollywood, where on-screen males outnumber females three to one (and behind-the-camera workers fare even worse.) WATCH HERE: TED TALKS

Brave Enough to Be Angry

NYT Opinion by Lindy West, Nov. 8, 2017

Not only are women expected to weather sexual violence, intimate partner violence, workplace discrimination, institutional subordination, the expectation of free domestic labor, the blame for our own victimization, and all the subtler, invisible cuts that undermine us daily, we are not even allowed to be angry about it. We are expected to keep quiet about the men who prey upon us, as though their predation was our choice, not theirs We are expected to not complain as we are diminished, degraded and discredited. Feminism is the collective manifestation of female anger. They suppress our anger for a reason. Let’s prove them right. (Excepts) READ MORE HERE

A MOONDANCER SPEAKS UP

THE DOLPHIN’S CALL

by Leotien Parlevliet, Netherlands

Behind their seeming smile, the dolphins call desperately: ¨Mother Earth is at stake¨. Once the forests are burning, the seas and oceans poisoned, most species wiped out, the bees gone, fertile soils changed into sandy plains and the birds stop singing. Once all these sounds die out and a dead silence falls, there’s no turning back, as a copy simply can’t be made. The dolphin’s call is loud and clear, and can no longer be denied. This cannot go on. Take action now and join our fight!
