GEORGE R.R. MARTIN

 “There’s always this tension between fiction and life. Fiction has more structure than life does. But we have to hide the structure. We have to hide the writer, and make the story seem like it was true.” ~ George R. R. Martin, author, “Game of Thrones” HBO series, from a Vanity Fair magazine cover article, April 2014

ON WOMEN IN THE HOLLYWOOD FILM INDUSTRY:

TO HOLLYWOOD, MEN ARE THE BIG-SCREEN HEROES

By Martha M. Lauzen and Jennifer Siebel NewsomVariety, March 18, 2014

It seems that everyone but those at the top of the Hollywood hierarchy has gotten the memo that the big-budget film world remains desperately behind the curve on gender diversity. In 2013, female characters comprised only 15% of all protagonists and just 30% of all speaking characters in the top-grossing 100 films, according to a study released last week by the Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film (see Variety.com for more on the study). Women of color were even less visible.

Behind the scenes, women accounted for 6% of directors and 10% of writers working on the top-grossing 250 films in 2013. These percentages are actually lower than those recorded in 1998. For all of the talk about gender diversity on various blogs and industry panels, little has changed in more than a decade. How can this be? We need leaders working at the major studios and unions who are willing to establish clear guidelines and practices that will result in greater numbers of women working behind the scenes and on screen. WGA DIVERSITY REPORT: WOMEN WRITERS SEE GAINS IN TV, SLIDE ON FILM SIDE

The WGA West 2014 Hollywood Writers Report has uncovered modest gains for minority and women TV writers but on the film side employment in these circles is continuing its slide, offsetting overall gains. Women remained underrepresented by a factor of nearly 2-to-1 among TV writers in 2012, claiming 27% of sector employment, and they earned about 92 cents for every dollar earned by white males in 2012 — up slightly from 91 cents in 2009. Women screenwriters accounted for 15% of sector employment (down from 17% in 2009) , and they earned 77 cents for every dollar earned by white male film writers in 2012, down from 82 cents in 2009.

Minority TV writers posted an increase in employment share (from 10% in 2009 to 11% in 2012), also closing the earnings gap “a bit.” Data also show that minorities watch a disproportionate share of television and theatrical films, while increases in their consumer spending outpace the rest of the nation. Older writers — especially ages 41-50 — claimed the largest share of employment in TV and film, as well as the highest earnings in each sector. The relative status of older writers tends to decline “rather rapidly” beyond age 60. “Before we are likely to realize meaningful, sustained change…other industry players – the networks, studios, and agents – will have to go well beyond what they have routinely done in the past to address the troubling shortfalls evident on the diversity front among writers. Only then will the industry position itself to make the most of opportunities afforded by audiences whose story needs are becoming more diverse by the moment.” READ MORE

LIVING WITH NATURE

GRASS “Exposure to Nature is good, even at low levels; the psychologist R.S. Ulrich found that hospital patients who had a view of trees recovered more quickly than those whose rooms looked out on a brick wall. Contact with Nature increases alpha-wave activity, at HZ 7-12, in the brain. These are the waves the brain creates when it Is relaxed. Therefore, mental and emotional health is improved. Interestingly, the resonant frequency of the Earth’s electromagnetic field is in the same HZ range as alpha-waves; consequently, when people are outside, they may be literally in sync with Nature.”

In his book, Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children From Nature-Deficit Disorder, Richard Louv details how children –- families as a whole, actually – are increasingly prone to stress and mental disorders, (and obesity) as a result of being ‘shut-in’, away from direct contact with Nature. “ ~ John Lewis-Stempel, author, The Wild LIfe

There are solutions, though, and they’re right in our own backyards. Last child in the Woods is the first book to bring together cutting-edge research showing that direct exposure to nature is essential for healthy childhood development — physical, emotional, and spiritual. What’s more, nature is a potent therapy for depression, obesity and ADD. Environment-based education dramatically improves standardized test scores and grade-point averages, and develops skills in problem solving, critical thinking, and decision-making. Even creativity is stimulated by childhood experiences in nature!

The season for shark fishing and dolphin killing is fast approaching. Action is urgently needed to stop the heinous slaughter of dolphins for shark bait. Harming dolphins is illegal in Peru so we have the law on our side. Now we need to get the authorities to enforce those laws. Enough is enough. It’s time to hold Peru accountable and change these disgraceful practices. Peru deserves its own version of The Cove and Blackfish. At BlueVoice.org, co-founded by actor Ted Danson, we are gathering documentary footage for just this purpose. In addition, we are producing a film showing the benefits of dolphin and whale watching to the Peruvian economy. Will you please join us? Your gift will help save the lives of thousands of dolphins and will help prevent the extinction of the Amazon River dolphin. Donate now and save the dolphins of Peru!

 Let me stress – the law is on our side. The Peruvian people and press are on our side. We can change government policy and save thousands of dolphins. We can’t do it without you. For the dolphins of Peru, Hardy Jones, BlueVoice.org

BEE+SUNFLOWER

~~~ SAVE OUR BEES AND OUR FOOD SUPPLY! ~~~
Do you know that U.S. beekeepers have lost an average of 45% of their colonies between the end of 2012 and the end of 2013? Or that, thanks to pesticides, hives are producing 85% fewer queens? Pesticides aren’t just terrifying for the beekeepers or our agricultural economy – they’re terrifying for everyone. Most of the food we eat requires plant and flower pollination – including breads, tree- & ground-nuts, honey, cows’ milk, chicken eggs, as well as all fruits and vegetables! And, the animals for meats that we eat, beef cattle, chickens, lambs, and pork, require grass, wheat, hay and corn for feed, all of which need bees to pollinate it.
We need you to help solve this problem for our country. Please support H.R. 2692, the “Saving America’s Pollinators Act”. This bill would protect bees by requiring the EPA to immediately suspend the use of the pesticides that kill bees, until their safety can be determined. It would also charge the EPA with monitoring bee health. it’s time to stop using chemicals that put bees — and the food we eat — at risk. EXPOSE FOX’S ANTI-CLIMATE AGENDA TODAY!
Fox News image
Fox News image
You wouldn’t feed your family all junk food all the time, but that’s exactly what Fox News is doing with its viewers when it comes to climate science. A study out just last week shows that when Fox News covers climate change, they get it wrong nearly 3 out of every 4 times! Fox is entitled to its own opinion, but not its own “facts”. Sometimes I think “Faux News” really would be a more accurate name for the network.
This matters — Fox is the most-watched cable news channel in the US, so millions of Americans are deceived when the network dresses up fossil fuel lies as climate science. No wonder so much of the public is confused about climate change. “How can there be global warming if it’s snowing and bitterly cold?” — Steve Doocy. Can you imagine a serious reporter or anchor anywhere else getting the facts wrong 3 out of 4 times? They’d be kicked right off the air!
It’s up to us to expose Fox News’ climate lies for what they really are. Sign the petition — tell Fox to stop misinforming the public and start featuring actual climate scientists!
BOULDER, COLORADO ROCK ARTIST:
Rock Balancing art on Boulder Creek, by Michael Grab
Rock Balancing art on Boulder Creek, by Michael Grab
Michael Grab is an artist who has been rock balancing since 2008. Much of his recent work has been done around the Boulder, Colorado area. Grab explains: “The most fundamental element of balancing in a physical sense is finding some kind of tripod for the rock to stand on. Every rock is covered in a variety of tiny to large indentations that can act as a tripod for the rock to stand upright, or in most orientations you can think of with other rocks. By paying close attention to the feeling of the rocks, you will start to feel even the smallest clicks as the notches of the rocks in contact are moving over one another.  These “sculptures” have no support other than the rocks themselves. VIDEO: WATCH THE ARTIST CREATE THESE SCULPTURES WITH ONLY “GRAVITY GLUE”! Come to the Moondance, and see these unique works of art in Boulder Creek!
It is such a pleasure to know there is someone out there who loves and values all of life and does not treat animals as if they have no feelings, as if they are not intelligent and as if they do not understand.” ~ Lorna Kantor, screenwriter & artist
