ATTENTION: All you rule-breakers, you misfits and troublemakers – all you free spirits and pioneers – all you visionaries and non-conformists… Everything that the establishment has told you is wrong with you – is actually what’s right with you.
You see things others don’t. You are hardwired to change the world. Unlike 9 out of 10 people – your mind is irrepressible – and this threatens authority. You were born to be a revolutionary. You can’t stand rules because in your heart you know there’s a better way. Gloria Steinem shared these words about Hedgebrook:
“It has always been crucial that Hedgebrook put women’s voices — marginalized for so long and at such cost to the truth — in the center of the human narrative, but in this dangerous time, I think it may be literally lifesaving. We’ve been sitting around campfires for millennia, telling stories, so our minds are organized by narrative, not facts or statistics. Only stories help us to break through old roles that normalize domination, and Hedgebrook is a global campfire.”HEDGEBROOK INFO
Hedgebrook is on Whidbey Island, about thirty-five miles northwest of Seattle. Situated on 48-acres of forest and meadow facing Puget Sound, with a view of Mount Rainier, the retreat hosts writers from all over the world for residencies of two to six weeks, at no cost to the writer.
Six writers are in residence at a time, each housed in a handcrafted cottage. They spend their days in solitude – writing, reading, taking walks in the woods on the property or on nearby Double Bluff beach. In the evenings, they gather in the farmhouse kitchen to share a home-cooked gourmet meal, their work, their process and their stories. The Writers in Residence Program is Hedgebrook’s core program, supporting the fully-funded residencies of approximately 40 writers at the retreat each year.

THE SECRET TO OUR INTERNATIONAL SUCCESS:
The secret to the Moondance brand’s international success and longevity can be directly attributed to upholding our founding principles, goals, integrity, values and mission. We continually strive to inspire talented filmmakers, writers, composers and audiences, locally and globally. Maintaining the Moondance reputation for top-quality indie films, writing & music is always the festival’s first priority. Our valued sponsors, donors, supporters, friends of the Moondance, as well as our competition entrants, are an integral element of our long-term success.
When judges preview films for film festival competitions, or when distributors look at films they may decide to screen in theaters, or during Academy Award nomination season, or when a talent agent may decide to take you on as a client, or when a production company or film studio is watching your demo reel or trailer, and considering you to direct a film, the actors’ performances are one of the most important elements they look for in the film. You may have a unique story, the best cinematographer, incredible editing, memorable film score, interesting locations, fabulous action scenes, great dialog, and impressive production values, but…if any of the actors, not just the lead actors, fluff a scene, or are wooden, over-act, are amateurish, or are simply unremarkable in their roles, you’ve just lost all credibility as a film director, and you may not ever get a second chance.READ MORE:
The power of music in film! Music is the non-verbal, unspoken dialog in a film. Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening
BY ROBERT FROST
Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.
My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.
He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound’s the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.
The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.
The Gun Industry’s Lucrative Relationship With Hollywood
By Gary Baum & Scott Johnson / The Hollywood Reporter
Clint Eastwood, “Unforgiven”, Warner Bros.
We’re talking about a lot of guns onscreen. Since 9/11, America’s obsession with everything spy, terrorism and war-related has grown — and the content the population consumes increasingly reflects that. A 2015 report published by The Economist concluded that gun violence in PG-13 movies had tripled since 1985.
And an analysis undertaken by The Hollywood Reporter found that the number of gun models pictured in big box-office movies between 2010 and 2015 was 51 percent higher than it had been a decade earlier, suggesting that the public’s appetite to see guns in entertainment is on the rise.
Simply put, two industries that position themselves as mortal enemies have a lucrative, symbiotic relationship. This is the story of how that relationship works.READ MORE

MOONDANCE RECOMMENDS:
~ LYRIO CHILDREN’S VILLAGE ~
In 1962, a group of young women made headlines in Greece by running away to join a convent. Not wanting to be doing nothing but praying all day, they also started a safe shelter, providing a family home for abandoned and abused children. Half a century later, they are still running the Lyrio Children’s Village, changing the lives one infant, one child, at a time. This is their story…For more info, please visit:www.manathemovie.com

Write, prepare, edit, rewrite, and polish your screenplay so it’s absolutely perfect, before you send it out to directors, producers, agents, managers, distributors, actors, film festivals &/or writing competitions, and for potential funding, as well as for others who may have requested your screenplay. Write a unique story, well-told, and you’ll have a better chance to get your screenplay read, optioned, green-lighted & produced as a film!
SCREENWRITERS NEED TO ADDRESS EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THE FOLLOWING ELEMENTS: Action, Audience Appeal, Budget, Castibility, Characterizations, Concept, Conflict, Dialogue, Evaluation, Exposition, Flow, Formatting, Genre, Humor, Interest, Locations, Logline, Marketability, Pace, Plot-line, POV, Premise, Principal Characters, Production Values, Relatability, Relationships, Scenes, Story, Story-Arc, Subplots, Syntax, Theme, Title, Transitions, & Visualization.
Write, prepare, edit, rewrite, and polish your screenplay so it’s perfect, before you send it out to directors, producers, agents, managers, distributors, actors, film festivals &/or writing competitions, and for potential funding, as well as for others who may have requested your film or screenplay.
SCREENWRITERS NEED TO ADDRESS ALL OF THE FOLLOWING ELEMENTS:
Writers should always try to avoid using the simple verb, “walk”, whenever possible! Why have your character just walk into a room, or across the road? It tells the reader almost nothing about the character’s current mood, personality, intent, feelings, or how he or she presents him- or herself, or how anyone might perceive or react to seeing the character. Here’s a chance to show the reader & the ultimate film-viewer more about the character, and to set up a sense of who this person is, and what to expect!
A character opens the door and walks in a room. Boring! Common! What if that character crawled in the window, instead? Or boogied in, maybe even stark naked? Or slinked in dressed in a bad-clown costume? A person in cowboy boots walks differently from a person in ballet slippers, or spike heels, or flip-flops, or is barefoot. Children, teenagers, men & women and seniors all move differently, too! Use everything you’ve got to tell the whole story!
We are taking a much-needed break after the 17th annual film festival in Boulder, but always available for your comments & emails! Very exciting plans are underway for 2017, so please remember to keep in touch for updates, announcements & news.
Chosen by the United Nations to be their Honorary Ambassador
for the Empowerment of Girls & Women
She first appeared in 1941, with a golden lasso, her “weapon of truth”, her bullet-deflecting bracelets, and her invisible airplane. She is portrayed both as a crime fighter and as an instigator of social justice. A symbol of strong feminism and gender equality, she prefers peace and love to war and violence. Wonder Woman is a perfect example of an action character whose unique attributes were compelling back then, and are even more so now. Her biggest battle was with society’s unacceptable view of women. When the Moondance’s founder was a little girl, she determined to grow up to be like Wonder Woman, follow her non-violent goals, and make a difference in the world, while encouraging others to appreciate and respect the abilities of all women and girls. The Moondance mission statement

• “Two Denver production companies, Main Man Films and SCY Pictures, have agreed to collaborate to produce LUDLOW and possibly create a “Band of Brothers” type of TV series based on the script and the Ludlow strike and massacre. By the way, the producers’ interest in the script can be traced directly to the Moondance Film Festival, for which I am very grateful. Thank you again for choosing LUDLOW, which shines a dramatic light on the 1914 coal miners’ strike in southern Colorado, as a 2016 script winner.” ~ Bruce Leaf
• “Music Between Us has been recently selected for the “Different Festival” at the Santa Fe Playhouse, and will receive 2 staged readings in October (I’ll travel to attend them). So once again – many thanks for selecting my play as the 2016 Moondance stageplay winner!” ~ Tal Rayman

Dolphins don’t care about your past, how spiritual you are, what job you have. They respond to innocence of the heart; they love connecting with those who share a childlike quality. Being to being. Dolphins love babies and kids and because they are new each moment. Simply responding to the here and now. Innocent. Free of the stories, emotions, filters and boundaries that we adults take to heart and filter themselves through.

Heifer has worked in Haiti since 1999. They currently serve nearly 30,000 families in 36 communities throughout the island. Heifer Haiti staff provided support Tuesday to more than 1,500 people in one of the regions hardest hit by Hurricane Matthew, acknowledging the level of need is staggering. Most of Haiti is severely deforested. Heifer Haiti is working to get food kits to the southern areas of the country that were hardest hit by Hurricane Matthew. Haiti is facing not only flooding, and an economic and social disaster, but a severe environmental one as well. The hurricane caused a huge loss…millions of dollars of losses in terms of crops and animals.
Haiti during hurricane Matthew, October 2016
More than 6,500 Heifer project families were affected: More than 675 hectares of crops, 5,000 goats, 70 % of the poultry, and more than 15 % of their pigs were killed in the storm. Farmers in the area were planning on harvesting crops rice, corn, papayas, and beans , but 4,500 hectares with 1,300 metric tons of food have been lost. More than 6,500 Heifer project families were affected, and the effects are likely to extend far beyond the immediate emergency. The biggest concerns are the loss of crops, livestock and housing. People will not have food to eat, clean water to drink, a place to live, or the ability to create income as there are no longer any crops or farm animals to sell.
