A World Without Coral Reefs
By Roger Bradbury, NY Times, July 13, 2012
It’s past time to tell the truth about the state of the world’s coral reefs, the nurseries of tropical coastal fish stocks. They have become zombie ecosystems, neither dead nor truly alive in any functional sense, and on a trajectory to collapse within a human generation. There will be remnants here and there, but the global coral reef ecosystem — with its storehouse of biodiversity and fisheries supporting millions of the world’s poor — will cease to be.
Overfishing, ocean acidification and pollution are pushing coral reefs into oblivion. The scientific evidence for this is compelling and unequivocal. Overfishing can bring down reefs because fish are one of the key functional groups that hold reefs together. Ocean acidification can also bring down reefs because it affects the corals themselves. (And) unstoppable pollution will force reefs beyond their survival envelope by mid-century. It will be a tragedy for global conservation, as hot spots of biodiversity are destroyed. Coral reefs will be the first, but certainly not the last, major ecosystem to succumb to the Anthropocene — the new geological epoch now emerging. THOUGHTS FOR THE DAY!
“It is our perception of life, rather than any particular life situation, that determines our happiness.” ~ Lynne Forrest
“Movies are just another form of merchandising – we have our factory, which is called a stage; we make a product, we color it, we title it, and we ship it out in cans and boxes.” ~ Cary Grant
“ He felt that his whole life was some kind of dream, and he sometimes wondered whose dream it was, and if he was enjoying it.” ~ Douglas Adams (The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy)
How to Find Balance in Life: “As a drummer and a writer, when I get tired of wrestling with words, I can go beat up the drums. Maybe everyone should have a drum to carry around to express (his or her) feelings. That would be funny.” ~ Neil Peart, as told to Spencer Bailey, Sunday NY Times, July 8, 2012
“…what is crucial is…imagination in all of its applications…the ability to form concepts with images of entities and processes pictured by intuition. Ideas emerge when a part of the real or imagined world is studied for its own sake.” ~ E. O. Wilson, Harvard sociobiologist, speaking in a recent TED symposium
“Apathy can only be overcome by enthusiasm, and enthusiasm can only be aroused by two things: first, an ideal which takes the imagination by storm, and second, a definite, intelligible plan for carrying that ideal into practice.” ~ Arnold Toynbee
“Nothing heals like the power of a true story. When someone is speaking from the inside of an event, then they are speaking from a moral and personal authority that pierces the veil of darkness. On the other side of that veil lies the light of hope, for them and for everyone else.” ~ Marianne Williamson
News from Colorado: “We are continually blessed to live in a state with a wide variety of rich and abundant natural resources. One of our most important and visible natural resources is our forests. This year, Colorado’s forests will give a Christmas gift to the nation when we send one large, pristine tree to Washington, D.C., as the 2012 U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree…where it will proudly showcase our state’s forests. The tree will be trimmed with ornaments made by kids across Colorado, and one lucky kid will be selected to travel to Washington, D.C., to light the tree.“~ Mark Udall, Colorado senator http://www.markudall.senate.gov/
News from New York City: Fed by the interest in locally grown produce, the new farm operations in New York are selling greens and other vegetables by the boxful to organically inclined residents, and by the bushel to supermarket chains like Whole Foods. The main difference between this century and previous ones is location: whether soil-based or hydroponic, in which vegetables are grown in water rather than soil, the new farms are spreading on rooftops, perhaps the last slice of untapped real estate in the city. “In terms of rooftop commercial agriculture, New York is definitely a leader at this moment,” said Joe Nasr, co-author of “Carrot City: Creating Places for Urban Agriculture”. Rooftop farms have the potential to capture millions of gallons of storm water and divert it from the sewer system, which can overflow when it rains. And harvesting produce in the boroughs means fewer trucks on local roadways and lower greenhouse gas emissions, a goal of Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg’s administration. (Excerpted from a NY Times article by Lisa W. Foderaro.)
