MYSTIC WELCOME SIGN MYSTIC RIVER

Moondance has been held in Hollywood at Universal Studios and in New York City at the Tribeca Cinemas, as well as in Boulder, Colorado, the festival’s original home. The film festival has also  been invited to relocate to many other locations, such as Malibu; NYC; San Antonio, TX; St. Petersburg, Russia; Sydney, Australia; London; Paris; Kauai, HI; Prince Edward Island, Canada, and many others, but I gladly selected the historic seaside village of Mystic, Connecticut, as the very best destination and new home for the Moondance, because of Mystic’s unique New England location between New York City and Boston, its culture, and its heartfelt welcoming ambience. “Put it in a Book” film, Moondance winner

Make A Film Foundation grants film wishes to children with serious or life-threatening medical conditions, helping them to create short film legacies by teaming them with noted actors, directors and writers. We believe the art of filmmaking is not only healing and therapeutic, but also offers hope and builds self-esteem. The children get to write and star in their own short film. In our ‘Vidz 4 Kidz’ program, we go into various hospitals and facilities, teaming the children with hand-held video cameras and film mentors who help them to create ‘mini-movies’ about their lives and their challenges. RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD

“The Rufous Hummingbird was common when we were kids. But it’s just one of dozens of familiar bird species headed for trouble. A Rufous Hummingbird weighs less than a French fry and can fly 1,000 miles, without food or rest. They may be mighty mites, but there’s one challenge they may not be able to overcome: us. National Audubon Society scientists estimate that the global population of these amazing flyers has declined nearly 60% in the past three decades.

What’s pushing hummingbirds toward the brink? A deadly combination of habitat destruction, toxic pollution and the spread of invasive plants. And now a new threat may overshadow them all: ecological chaos caused by a warming climate. Warmer weather prompts earlier flowering of nectar-bearing plants that hummingbirds rely on during their epic migrations. If the flowers are gone before the birds arrive, they may starve.

Will our children and grandchildren grow up with the wonder of watching a hummingbird hover over the flowerbed or sip nectar from a backyard feeder?

Audubon has always been at the forefront of protecting birds and their habitats. And as threats have grown, so have the breadth and sophistication of our conservation strategies. Donate to Audubon today and your gift will be matched dollar for dollar. www.audubon.org

SOME THINGS TO THINK ABOUT:

GRASS & WILDFLOWERS

“We have it backwards. We think that when we overcome difficulty, then we will be happy, but it’s happiness itself that delivers us from chaos.

Happiness is being able to dance through the difficult times, and learn what they are here to teach us. Your potential is waiting for you in the challenges you will choose to face. A desire for bigger things is good if it propels us to nurture the blessings in our own life, and to do the work necessary to create even more.

The grass isn’t greener on the other side of the fence. It’s greener on the lawn most cared for.” ~ YEHUDA BERG

 GOD + ADAM

“Michelangelo didn’t paint the Sistine Chapel while he was texting on his smart phone, and Tolstoy didn’t write “War and Peace” while he was watching a football game on TV.

As much as we may feel productive when we are multi-tasking, we can’t be at our best when we our energy is scattered.

Doing only one thing that is truly incredible is far better than doing a hundred things that are all mediocre.” ~ YEHUDA BERG

“We Were Quiet Once” Trailer

hills

Watch the “We Were Quiet Once” Trailer:

Feature documentary film, directed by Laura Beachy, Ryan Balton, & Cory Sage (USA).  Somerset, Pennsylvania, was a picture-perfect small, rural  farming town, where life embodied a quiet, pleasant innocence. That is, until September 11, 2001, when United Flight 93 crashed in Somerset’s sheltered countryside, claiming 40 innocent lives, and forever changing the people on the ground. How do these people memorialize the tragedy which touched them? Grief connected this small community with a nation and a world. This film reveals how the community embraced a passionate patriotism, and went on to ride all the way to Washington, DC, and to Ground Zero, some 2000-strong, to show the world that Americans will not forget the brave sacrifice of those 40 lives.  Let’s roll! ~60 minutes

MOONDANCE SELECTED AS ONE OF THE

Top Women’s Film Festivals in the World!

by Madeline Wickman in Indie Tips, Producing Tips

Moondance International Film Festival – This festival stays true to their original goal to present films and writings which successfully raise awareness about a variety of vital social issues. Besides their feminist initiatives, other objectives include educating writers, filmmakers, and film festival audiences, and inspiring them to take action upon this knowledge. Moondance uses this entertainment media to stimulate social and environmental change. Having initially started to widen the knowledge of the hardships women face, as the festival has matured, it has also expanded the social issues it promotes.

Women’s film festivals aim to provide a true perception of women, whether they are victorious or defeated. With an industry that is dominated by males, these film festivals have turned into a global project by, for and about women.

The criteria I used to select these top film festivals are similar to those that could be used for general film festivals. The one defining quality is that the festival, in fact, promotes what it actually is. Women’s film festivals began due to the lack of female voice within the film industry. To combat this hindrance, their own film festival was designed.

If women’s film festivals don’t promote the issue that women aren’t in the industry, no one will listen and nothing will change. Individuals involved have the opportunity to call attention to the fact that, while just as many women may be going into film studies and other forms of film education, men still dominate the field. These festivals are attended by individuals who are likely to be the most sensitive and passionate about the issue. If you can’t make them care, no one will.

I’d also like to applaud broadening efforts that most of these festivals are making. They have acknowledged more than just the suppression that women face, and now work to challenge many other discriminatory disputes. It’s no longer feminist banter to promote more women in the film industry. Women film festivals are facilitating new perspectives against other minority populations as well.

mystic44

Stories of the Mer-Folk, especially Mermaids, exist in nearly every culture around the world where there are oceans, lakes, ponds, rivers or streams. Human-like, except for their iridescent, scaly tails, Mermaids and Mermen have fascinated humans for thousands of years. These beautiful, mythical creatures live in folklore tales around the world, called Rusalka in Russia, Selkies on the coasts of the UK, and Mami Wata, in Africa, for just a few examples. Because the largest of these mystical beings live in the oceans, most people are not aware that smaller versions of the Mer-Folk live in fresh water, too, in inland rivers, streams, marshes, and large or small waterfalls. Like many other magical, mythological beings, the Mermaids travel easily between this world and the astral planes, appearing only to those who truly seek to know them, and to learn their ancient powers.

CLARIFYING THE MOONDANCE STATEMENT ON NON-VIOLENCE:

The goal of Moondance is not to unrealistically refuse to acknowledge violence in the world, but to offer, where possible, alternatives to it, and to actively promote peaceful, non-violent conflict resolution. We have screened winning films at Moondance, and written works have won awards, which show violent scenes. We just prefer to promote possible alternatives, and to show how violent conflict-resolution is usually counter-productive. But a historical scene of a killing, in a duel, for example, or a war, and so on, is acceptable at Moondance. It is depictions of gratuitous violence, and killing for the sake of a thrill, that we object to considering at the Moondance.

DINNER WITH THE SMILEYS:

One Military Family, One Year of Heroes,

and Lessons for a Lifetime

Click on the book cover

Fifty-two guests take turns filling a military father’s chair at his family’s dinner table while he serves his yearlong deployment. The week before Thanksgiving 2011, Dustin Smiley left for a yearlong military deployment. Soon after, his son Ford, eleven, invited Senator Susan Collins to fill his dad’s chair at dinner.

Amazon.com review: Dinner With The Smileys Is A Must Read This is such an incredible and touching story. It speaks to the relationship between a mom and her sons. It’s beyond filling a seat at dinner, it’s about relationships and lessons for a lifetime. You will laugh, shed a tear and feel like you’re part of this very special family and the adventures that surely changed their lives forever.

FILMS CHANGING THE WORLD!

This picture shows child activists working with Amlan Ganguly, marching through the streets of Calcutta using megaphones to spread health messages. These girls are from a documentary film called The Revolutionary Optimists by Nicole Newnham and Maren-Grainger-Monsen. Amlan Ganguly empowers children to become activists and educators, with powerful results. The Revolutionary Optimists follows him as he attempts to replicate his work in the brick fields outside the city, where children live and work in unimaginable conditions. Using street theater, puppetry, and dance as their weapons, the children in Calcutta’s slums have cut their neighborhoods’ malaria and diarrhea rates in half, and turned former garbage dumps into playing fields. Ganguly’s story suggests that education and child empowerment are crucial keys to lifting entire societies out of hopelessness. Co-presented by the Women’s Film Institute. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

SOME THINGS TO THINK ABOUT

“When one door closes, another one opens. But we often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door, that we do not see the one which has opened.” ~ HELEN KELLER ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

“When we first come to study enlightenment, it is usually with the intention to help ourselves and to achieve serenity. We wish to become better people, and to live better, more meaningful lives. We want to have fewer negative thoughts, be less judgmental, and encounter fewer toxic relationships.

But at some point, a true student realizes that this endeavor is not about self-help. It’s about helping others. Improving our own lives is only the result of when we become a greater channel to improve the lives of others.

The real goal is to work toward the elevation of the entire world.”  ~ EE & YB ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

We know that dolphins, porpoises and whales are much more intelligent and sentient than most humans realize. This message is being echoed by tens of millions of people around the world because of movies like our Oscar-winning film, The Cove, and supporters like you. Film is a powerful way to evolve culture, but we still have so much more work to do. Our oceans continue to be assaulted by overfishing, pollution, habitat destruction and perhaps the worst threat of all, acidification. All of this is adding up to a mass species extinction like the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs 65 million year ago. Except this time, we are the asteroid.

Our next film tackles this issue head on. We’re doing it by telling a great story with a very compelling cast of characters–every day heroes–and then, like The Cove, bringing them together to a crescendo that illuminates the issue and the solutions on the biggest stage imaginable. When people ask me what the next film is about I tell them, “It’s just like The Avengers, only it’s real.” Many thanks to you all for helping us create a better world for not just humans, but for all Earthlings. ~~ Louie Psihoyos & the OPS Team Oceanic Preservation Society, Boulder, CO. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The Earth’s soils are living, dynamic interfaces that are habitats for millions of microbial and animal species. The activities of soil biota are critical to the wellbeing of human societies because their activities underpin the delivery of major ecosystem services. Soil organisms are responsible for ensuring that the nutrients necessary to produce the ear of corn that we will consume next year will be made available from last year’s roots and residues. They are also responsible for sustaining the soil’s capacity to provide us with food in the decades and centuries to come. All of this is very well known by scientists, but the majority of people are hardly aware of this critical role played by soil biota.

Glowing Millipedes found on Alcatraz Island

Sunday May 12, 2013 – New York Times author Jim Robbins highlights soil biodiversity and GSBI in an article The Hidden World Under Our Feet. Robbins describes the importance of soil biodiversity for maintaining healthy soil as well as the GSBI sponsored project in central park.  Soil biodiversity is receiving lots of attention in the media thanks to Dr. Diana Wall, GSBI Scientific Chair, receiving the Tyler prize. In the words of Dr. Wall “It’s showtime for soil biodiversity.”

Sometimes, a hug is all we need!

FREE HUGS is a real-life controversial story of Juan Mann, A man whose sole mission was to reach out and hug a stranger to brighten up their lives. In this age of social dis-connectivity and lack of human contact, the effects of the Free Hugs campaign became phenomenal. As this symbol of human hope spread across the city, police and officials ordered the Free Hugs campaign BANNED. What we then witness is the true spirit of humanity come together in what can only be described as awe-inspiring. In the spirit of the free hugs campaign, PASS THIS TO A FRIEND and HUG A STRANGER! After all, If you can reach just one person…

MOONDANCE: BIG NEWS ANNOUNCEMENT FOR 2013!

wings

It’s the warm and sunny month of May! Now you can create a garden that is your peaceful sanctuary — a calm refuge from the stresses of everyday life, a soothing balm for heart and soul, a place of natural beauty to engage the senses, in which to go barefoot and connect with nature, where you can foster personal growth, serenity and spiritual awareness.

2013 MOONDANCE SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT:

Moondance has been offered the unique opportunity to hold the 2013 film festival event in Mystic, Connecticut!

Mystic, Connecticut, located mid-way between New York City and Boston, has the unique distinction of being one of the most popular tourist and vacation areas in New England. It’s a lovely small seaside town within easy driving distance to New York City, with big-city amenities – great seafood restaurants, a lively arts and music scene, and the historic Olde Mystic Village. Mystic has become known for its quintessential New England charm, as well as its two world-class attractions: Mystic Seaport, the world’s largest maritime museum, and the Mystic Aquarium, featuring fascinating creatures from both sea and land, as well as the exhibits of Dr. Robert Ballard, discoverer of the Titanic. Mystic also has beautiful beaches, a lighthouse, and now, Mystic can boast that it’s the new home of the Moondance International Film Festival & Market!

Please give a very warm welcome to Moondance’s 2013 Festival Director & Marketing Director, the talented and award-winning Mystic filmmaker and producer, Hans Hartman! Hans is the new Festival Director for the Moondance International Film Festival and is building the premiere Moondance Film Market, for filmmakers, writers & music composers, and for entertainment industry buyers & sellers.

Hans Hartman

He has been in the entertainment industry since 1968, and has worked in almost every stage of the production process. In 1978, Hans started working behind the camera and started editing film in the mid 1970’s and video in the early 1980’s. As the digital migration came about, he learned several NLE systems and became an expert on FCP Studio Suite. Hans taught 35mm filmmaking at a prestigious college, in Florida, and created “The Young Filmmaker’s Workshop” in Orlando, FL.

Hartman has hundreds of film, television and commercial projects to his credit. In 2002, Hans formed a new production company to focus on film and digital cinema, called H2Films. Hans has also been recognized by the State of Connecticut and appointed to the Advisory Board of the Department of Economic and Community Development. Currently, he is working on producing a slate of films in the mid-range. Using his knowledge of independent filmmaking techniques and new media, he is able to keep quality high and prices reasonable. Hans is passionate about building the infrastructure needed to bring more films & filmmakers to Connecticut.

A MOONDANCER WRITES US:

“Elizabeth, I’m writing to let you know that I just finished my second screenplay, using the methods and writing secrets that you exposed me to on my first screenplay. Your critique of my work was dead-on. The common sense – no nonsense approach brings out the details and cuts out the fluff. I’m very proud of both of my screenplays now, which could not have been so well-written without your tutelage. I’m confident that I have achieved a much higher plane of quality screenwriting since your professional evaluation via 7seas Productions. My first screenplay is already being considered by a production company! THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH” ~ Michael L. Edwards, Moondance award-winning screenwriter and music composer

Oceana: Our Endangered Oceans and What We Can Do to Save Them

by Ted Danson & Michael D’Orso

Most people know Ted Danson as the affable bartender Sam Malone in the long-running television series Cheers. But fewer realize that over the course of the past two and a half decades, Danson has tirelessly devoted himself to the cause of heading off a looming global catastrophe—the massive destruction of our planet’s oceanic biosystems and the complete collapse of the world’s major commercial fisheries.

In Oceana, Danson details his journey from joining a modest local protest in the mid 1980s to oppose offshore oil drilling near his Southern California neighborhood to his current status as one of the world’s most influential oceanic environmental activists, testifying before congressional committees in Washington, D.C., addressing the World Trade Organization in Zurich, Switzerland, and helping found Oceana, the largest organization in the world focused solely on ocean conservation.

In his incisive, conversational voice, Danson describes what has happened to our oceans in just the past half-century, ranging from the ravages of over-fishing and habitat destruction to the devastating effects of ocean acidification and the wasteful horrors of fish farms. Danson also shares the stage of Oceana with some of the world’s most respected authorities in the fields of marine science, commercial fishing, and environmental law, as well as with other influential activists.

Combining vivid, personal prose with an array of stunning graphics, charts, and photographs, Oceana powerfully illustrates the impending crises and offers solutions that may allow us to avert them, showing you the specific courses of action you can take to become active, responsible stewards of our planet’s most precious resource—its oceans. (text from www.amazon.com book blurb)

SOME THINGS TO THINK ABOUT:

Guatemalan girl & tourist

“Though most of us consider ourselves to be people who share, we probably still fall into the trap of sharing with strings attached. We tend to give most to the people who give us love, friendship, or security in return.

If you really want to practice sharing without an agenda, give something to the person who has nothing to offer you.

Start with one person a week, then make it two. This is a powerful practice in growing our capacity for unconditional sharing.” ~ YEHUDA BERG, Kabbalahist

“Taking note of how much we give or take energy can provide a gauge for where we are spiritually.

Examples of taking energy include: Watching TV, gossiping, overindulging, and complaining.

Examples of giving energy include: Volunteer efforts, creative outlets, positive new projects, and sharing support with a friend.

Isn’t it weird that the things we take energy from actually make us feel drained, whereas the ways in which we give make us more energized?

The way to get more energy is to give it!” ~ YEHUDA BERG

Haven’t quite finished post on your film yet, but want to promote it now?

Great trailers are in a special class of their own; little polished gems that showcase your film, and make people want to see more! But film trailers can be more difficult to make really well than the entire film, itself.  It can be more time-consuming, judicious editing must be a main concern, you have to tell the main story, theme & concept quickly, harder scene decisions need to be made, and you need to sell your film in less than three minutes.

Can you tell the main story, introduce the lead characters, show the main conflict, and give the viewer a visual, memorable impression in under three minutes? And, remember, you need to hook the viewer in the first few seconds! You probably don’t even have a full 3 minutes to do the job, unless the first 10-30 seconds are fantastic.

You need to know how to turn your great story into a great 1 to 3-minute (or less) trailer. There is and always has been only one real secret to success in the entertainment industry. Tell a great story. Period. And you need to figure out how to tell that fabulous story in only two to three minutes or less!

Can you say “logline”? The screenplay for your film probably has one. Use that 25-word or 3-line mini-synopsis as the script for your trailer. When scripting your trailer, use a clear 3-act structure. Here’s an example of a feature animation logline that could easily be edited from film footage for a trailer: Orion, a rare green dolphin, grows up to save the world of sea creatures and their habitats through a series of fabulous adventures, conflicts and mystical occurrences. An epic saga of a larger-than-life hero dolphin, LEGEND OF THE GREEN DOLPHIN creates an undersea realm of incredible sea creatures and their beautiful watery habitats in the world’s seas and oceans. Orion seeks his purpose in life, and, along with his silvery dolphin companion, a wise old whale, the compassionate human he encounters, and a delightful Mermaid, he finds his way to his spiritual vision, and his reason for being. (underlined text suggests  film clips to consider using in the trailer)

You need to know how to get your film enthusiastically viewed by an agent and then a financial sponsor, producer, director, film festival judges, and even actors. Learn what they’re looking for. In order to raise money to make a film, it is essential to produce a high-quality trailer that will capture the imagination and confidence of grant-makers and investors. Your first impression to these movers and shakers is all about the fine art of pitching your film, your TV series concept or story idea, via your eye-catching trailer, which should be a dynamic collection of its greatest elements.

“SELL THE SIZZLE; NOT JUST THE STEAK!” A great title for your film is the first (and maybe only) introduction to a sponsor, an agent, a producer, director, film distributor, or studio. “You’ve got 3 minutes; pitch me what you’ve got,” is what you’ll hear from the entertainment industry movers & shakers who might buy your project. But you probably won’t even get that meeting, or a reply to your query letter, if you don’t have an interesting title and trailer that catches their eye. Know how to “dress” your film for success, make it stand out from all the others, and get it noticed in the first round.

You’ve got to cram a lot into a short, one-to-three-minute trailer: genre, conflict, character, action, location, time, any crisis to be resolved, hint at the potential transformation of the main character, marketability, and it needs to sizzle! The trailer is the key that opens the door to getting your full film considered. The same amount of thought that a filmmaker takes in directing the film should also be taken in creating the trailer. A trailer is not a mini-version of your film! It’s much, much harder to direct and edit a good two- or three-minute trailer than it is to shoot the short or feature film.

A great trailer can mean getting a million hits on YouTube and maybe going viral. For indie filmmakers, it’s a chance to have their low- or no-budget movies seen on iTunes and rented from Netflix. A movie trailer is the principal way most movies get exposure, these days, and is one of the most important marketing and promotional tools that is affordable and available to any filmmaker.

A viewer should be able get the full story concept of the film from these one to three minutes. He or she should know immediately what the whole movie is about and get excited about the story-line and idea, and can visualize the finished film. The trailer must propel the viewer through the experience of the film, itself, and build up excitement and anticipation

Always consider who your target audience is. What’s the demographic for your story? Who’s going to be viewing your trailer? If your film has several different points to make, or could be of interest to different age-groups or a variety of audiences, film festivals, competitions, or distributors, you might even want to consider making several different trailers in order to attract them. It’s like going fishing; you need to have the right lure, the right bait!

Film festival programmers and promotions staff absolutely need fabulous trailers for the films they’ve selected for screenings, to show at media screenings prior to the event, get good media reviews for the festival’s films, and in order to entice audiences to buy movie tickets to see those films.

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO CREATE THE BEST TRAILER:

  • Be more inventive than other filmmakers. For example, assemble fake news footage into a montage, or show the biggest action first, even if it doesn’t happen right away in the film, or a comedy routine & leaving out the punch-line, or fade quickly from black & white into living color.
  • While introducing the movie’s story and its characters, a trailer most often follows the order of the film’s story and plot, but it doesn’t have to!
  • Don’t give away too much. Offer only brief glimpses of your most impressive scenes, accompanied by a quick fade-out & segue from one to the next.
  • Teasers: While trailers often focus on plot or character descriptions, teasers establish the mood and tone of a film. A good trailer will artfully combine all of those powerful elements.
  • Single words written across the screen have more impact than whole sentences; break your taglines up into its component parts and sprinkle them throughout the trailer. “MURDER” – “IN THE CAVE OF” – “THE RED DRAGON” or “FORBIDDEN” – “LOVE” keeps your viewer watching to see what’s next!
  • Don’t forget, the title is the MAIN thing you want viewers to remember. Save at least 10 seconds at the end of the trailer for a slow reveal.
  • If you have name talent as a director or known stars as leads, name them and show them in their roles first, to catch people’s attention (especially if any of them are half-naked or in mortal danger).
  • Has your film been an official selection or an award-winner at Sundance, Cannes, Moondance, Toronto, or anywhere well-known? Got a great film review in The New York Times? Quote it! Let it be known right away. Nobody wants to be the first one out on the dance-floor, but they’ll often “like” something someone else approves of, recommends, and likes, first.
  • You haven’t got much time to introduce your lead characters, so sum each one up with a few brief scenes that reveals who they are and what they do in the film. Yet do this in a way that coherently tells the story at the same time!
  • Trailers for thrillers and comedies have a much faster cutting and editing style, and with louder music, than do dramas, romantic comedies, or documentaries. It’s a good way of ratcheting up attention and excitement for the film.

Quote from a FILMMAKER Magazine article by Stephen Garrett:

There are also many familiar editing tropes in trailers: dissolves, fades from black, fades to black, white flashes with the metal-door slams, fast-paced flutter-cuts, double exposures, speed adjustments, audio rises, audio drones, audio stings. These effects are like the images from the film itself: they are tools in a toolbox.

“I invented this rule for myself, to be applied to every decision I might have to make in the future. I would sort out all the arguments and see which belonged to fear and which to creativeness, and other things being equal, I would make the decision which had the larger number of creative reasons on its side. I think it must be a rule something like this that makes jonquils and crocuses come pushing through the cold mud in the early spring.” ~ Katharine Butler Hathaway, American writer

IN MEMORY:

The Elephants’ Journey To Pay Respect

Lawrence Anthony, a legend in South Africa and author of 3 books including the bestseller The Elephant Whisperer, bravely rescued wildlife and rehabilitated  elephants all over the globe from human atrocities, including the  courageous rescue of Baghdad Zoo animals during US invasion in  2003.

On March 7, 2012 Lawrence Anthony died.

He is remembered and missed by his wife, 2 sons, 2  grandsons and  numerous elephants.

Two days after his  passing, the wild elephants showed up at his home led by two large  matriarchs.

Separate wild herds arrived in droves to say  goodbye to their beloved man-friend.

A total of 31  elephants had patiently walked over 12 miles to get to his South  African house.

Witnessing this spectacle, humans  were obviously in awe not only because of the supreme intelligence  and precise timing that these elephants sensed about Lawrence , but  also because of the profound memory and emotion the beloved animals  evoked in such an organized way: Walking slowly – for days –  making their way in a solemn one-by-one queue from their habitat  to his house.

So, how after Anthony’s death, did the  reserve’s elephants — grazing miles away in distant parts of the  park — know? “A good man died suddenly,” says Rabbi Leila Gal  Berner, Ph.D., “and from miles and miles away, two herds of  elephants, sensing that they had lost a beloved human friend, moved  in a solemn, almost ‘funereal’ procession to make a call on the  bereaved family at the deceased man’s home.”

“

If there ever  were a time, when we can truly sense the wondrous  ‘interconnectedness of all beings,’ it is when we reflect on the  elephants of Thula Thula. A man’s heart stops, and hundreds of  elephants’ hearts are grieving. This man’s abundantly loving heart  offered healing to these elephants, and now, they came to pay loving  homage to their friend.”

Lawrence ‘s wife, Francoise, was  especially touched, knowing that the elephants had not been to  his house prior to that day for well over 3 years! Yet they  knew where they were going.

The elephants obviously wanted to  pay their deep respects, honouring their friend who’d saved their  lives – so much respect that they stayed for 2 days 2 nights  without eating anything.

Then one morning they quietly left,  and made their long journey  back.
