READ WHAT THE 2012 MOONDANCERS WRITE TO US:

“I had a great time at the 2012 Moondance International Film Festival. The panels and workshops that I attended were informative and interesting; I loved the international aspect of the festival. I watched high quality films about important issues and playful pleasures throughout the world. I met people from as far away as Australia and London. The boat ride brunch around Manhattan was a treat. There were plenty of opportunities for networking. Of course, the heart and soul of the festival was the director, Elizabeth English. She was tirelessly, and passionately, supportive of all of the writers, directors, composers and filmmakers who attended the festival. Elizabeth made a point of connecting with and encouraging each one of us. My consultation with her was very helpful. I will definitely attend Moondance again. Thanks for the lovely introduction you gave me when I received my award. Thank you for also being so generous with your time and input during our private consultation.” ~ Donna Lisa, winning writer, Wheels – The June Bug”

“It was really a pleasure having your festival at TriBeCa Cinemas. Once again, I want to express how much I enjoyed your programming. We host many festivals, and I was truly impressed by the quality of the films at MOONDANCE! ~ Ryan Littman, Tribeca Cinemas Events Manager

“I wanted to thank you so much for the opportunity to take part in The Moondance International Film Festival this year. I sincerely appreciate your patience, flexibility, and your sense of what I was trying to accomplish with my television pilot. After the Moondance results, I had some faith that I was going in the right direction. I have a manager submitting it now to producers…crossing fingers…but the Moondance award definitely helps the cause.” ~ Wendy Brache, 2012 Moondance winner for “Tweeters” TV pilot script

I am very grateful to you, Elizabeth, for selecting “Little Dancer” for screening at the Moondance. United Nations people who were there are now on board with the film, and so much good can come from all of it.  I also see what a wonderful photographer Rodney Rascona is (“Black Inside” winning PSA) as you had mentioned, and he and Ben Pickup at the UNF can make a difference for women around the world, as well, by focusing on the topic of providing new, safer ways of cooking. Bless you Elizabeth for your courage and determination to make a difference in the world with Moondance.” ~~ Marc & Marla Halperin, www.magiclampreleasing.com

“Just wanted to thank you for your kind words at the awards ceremony & reception, regarding my short screenplay “The Chocolate Kandinsky”.  It was a privilege to be in a room filled with so many talented and open-hearted filmmakers.  I felt welcomed into the Moondance family, and the encouragement and new friendships I found are invaluable.  Thanks again for letting me be part of your wonderful festival.” ~ Suzanne Giffin

“It was a great pleasure meeting you in NYC for the Moondance Film Festival and getting a win in the Moondance. Vlad is climbing the walls with great excitement! The most valuable thing about this event was networking. Thank you again for my award. I am on to my next project right now, which is somewhat of a sequel to this. Perhaps it will be ready next year for the Moondance! Thanks again for everything. You did a wonderful job.” ~ Mark Lysgaard, winning screenwriter “Vlad the Inhaler”

“It was so wonderful meeting you this weekend at the Moondance International Film Festival.  I had such a great time working on the festival and am very grateful for the opportunity to meet so many impassioned individuals. The festival provided me with many networking opportunities, which were invaluable experiences.  Thank you again for the opportunity to be part of the Moondance International Film Festival, and I hope our paths cross again in the future!” ~ Samantha Walsh, Public Relations & Marketing

I want to thank you, personally, for the Columbine Award, and the greatest award, the opportunity to meet you. Here is the picture I took with my iPad; apparently, not a good-hair day.  But the picture captures two women who represent freedom. Thank you again, Elizabeth, for this great honor.  Sunday was a blast! ~ Tom Lidd, screenwriting winner for “Separate > Equal”

“We’re very excited to have our first screening in New York City and where the idea for Mission of Mermaids all began. After two years of work and dedication to this project and the cause behind it, we’ve come full circle. the NYC screening at the Moondance International Film Festival. M.O.M. had its NYC premiere at this lovely festival, perfect for our topic. Aside from having a Mermaid as their logo, their mission is right in tune with our own. ~ Susan Rockefeller, director

MOONDANCERS WRITE US!

“Over the years, I have tried to break into a major festival. When I found out my short story had been named a semi-finalist at Moondance 2012, I had a slight hallelujuah moment. I’m pretty sure my entire apartment complex knows I’m a semi-finalist at Moondance. I am overjoyed that the story that gave me my first publishing breakthrough also won this accolade. I say won, because knowing someone was happy with my short story gives me great pride. Thank you, Moondance, for this honor.”- Amy McCorkle, “Another Way to Die”

“Just wanted to write you a quick note to say a massive thank you! Anny Slater, at the Good Dog Film Festival, told me you had recommended my film and asked me to send it in – and I did, and it won best drama short and $500! Thank you for awarding Fixing Jack with a win in the 2012 screenplay section! We’re thrilled. We love the script, and your support means a lot. It seems that I have great luck at your festival over the years – first Christian Savage, then Mahpa, now a semi-finalist for Girl Clock and a win for Fixing Jack! You do great things for starving artists everywhere. Lots of love and hugs from a warm and sunny Brisbane.” ~ Jennifer Ussi, Australia, award-winning screenwriter & filmmaker

“First of all, thank you for screening our film at your festival…it’s the first recognition, with a long journey ahead for those women…so let it be known that we started this journey with you. We are up to our necks in preparation for the symposium in Lima, Peru, which is featuring 28 framed large-format pieces, of women and children around the globe, and will be announcing that my team and I are in production of the feature documentary…a long-form of these women’s stories presented in “Black Inside – Three Womens’ Voicees”. The organizations there, from WHO to GIZ, UNDP etc. will be showing our film to the attendees, which will be quite interesting!” ~ Rodney Rascona, Director

MOONDANCE RECOMMENDS:

“JOHNNY MONTANA”

Feature film by John Gavin

Johnny vs. the cops!

“JOHNNY MONTANA”: Feature film by John Gavin. Johnny is a Brooklyn guy in his mid-20s trying to grow beyond his provincial background. Frustrated, trapped, and living at home in blue-collar Brooklyn with his aging parents, Johnny wants to be a “somebody,” even acquiring the last name of his hero, Joe Montana. In his quest for self-discovery, he falls into a dark underworld that brings him everything he wants…or so he thought. Shot over 360 days in 60 New York locations, entirely “guerilla-style,” Johnny Montana captures New York’s vibrant grittiness, un-sanitized. From subway cars to penthouses, Times Square to Rockefeller Center, Manhattan isn’t just a backdrop – it’s a character in itself. Reviews
: “The new high watermark in no-budget feature filmmaking…”  Paul Rogers, LA Film Critic. “..Epitomizes the perfect indie flick…It gets  no better than Johnny Montana…”  Mike Skurko, Indiefest

Johnny’s blind date!

by Moondance filmmaker, Eric Bosse

The world we think we know shifts and turns otherworldly in the short stories and flash fictions that make up Eric Bosse’s Magnificent Mistakes. In smooth, subtle prose, Bosse moves through the lives of a menagerie of misfits, crackpots, and odd-ones-out. Lit through from start to finish with an oblique sense of the darker side of life, this imaginative collection of stories evokes tenderness, even as it refuses to forgive. Reviews: “Readers will find these nineteen stories beautifully strange and evocative. Inhabited by oddballs, lovers, ghosts, and runaways, the world Bosse creates is full of the unexpected, of chance encounters, and the vast and moving struggles of misfiring hearts. A stunning collection.” ~ Kathy Fish, author • “Eric Bosse has somehow learned all our secrets, and now he’s put them on display in Magnificent Mistakes. With this cheerfully mordant collection, he takes it all on—God, patricide, deviant sex, jugglers with nothing left to live for—and doesn’t flinch once throughout.” ~ Ron Currie, Jr., author. Eric Bosse’s short comedy film, “My Mother Received a Wound” will be screening at Moondance 2012! BUY THE BOOK, only $12.95!

THOUGHTS FOR THE DAY

"Amelia" Photo by SKV

“Now, I say to you today my friends, even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: – ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.’” ~ Martin Luther King Jr., Speech at Civil Rights March on Washington, August 28, 1963

MOONDANCERS WRITE US!

I suppose, in some places, news like this doesn’t matter much, but out here in the middle of the Pacific, for such a tiny place to have something (anything) happen in NY City is huge. As the word has gotten around town, my phone has been ringing off the hook (a lot of people and businesses have been involved in our films over the years, so we have a pretty good following).  I had a Council meeting with the Bikinians today about other matters, and when I told them our film is showing in NYC, they all applauded. Money can’t buy this kind of feeling. At any rate, I just wanted to say thanks from all of us.”

Out here (in the Marshall Islands), we have a very popular once-a-week newspaper yokwe.net,  We (“Crickets” and Moondance/NYC) take up the entire front page with the article taking another half-page within the paper. I am sure there aren’t many countries in the world where an award in a film festival becomes a source of national pride! I just got a call from Radio New Zealand interviewing me about going to Moondance.  The woman was referring to Moondance as “one of the greatest film festivals in the world…” Tomorrow I am doing an interview with Radio Australia.  The entire Pacific is going nuts over this!” ~ Jack Niedenthal, Marshall Islands, director: “The Sound of Crickets at Night” 2012 short film winner

“I wanted to thank you again for being so friendly and helpful. As I’m sure you know, this business can be alienating and difficult to pursue. I have committed myself to filmmaking, no matter what…but, that being said, a friendly voice on the other end of the phone has meant the world to me. So, thank you for your support.” ~ Connor McLean

MAGIC LAMP RELEASING

What does it take to actually get your film into theatres? How do you attract the attention of top-level distribution executives? How do you know which festivals are right for your film? In other words, how do you get your film noticed, in a glutted indie market that seems less “indie” with every passing year? These are questions that haunt the indendent filmmaker and bring even the best projects to a grinding halt.

What if you had a team of WORLD-CLASS DISTRIBUTION & MARKETING PROFESSIONALS working to bring your film to  wide market?

WEBSITEhttp://www.magiclampreleasing.com/main.html

CONTACT: Marla Halperin now, at: marla@magiclampreleasing.com

Ms. Halperin has very successfully promoted film directors and their films at Moondance, Cannes, and other major film festivals, as well as to US and foreign distributors.

The Make A Film Foundation provides an opportunity for young people diagnosed with critical or terminal illness to use the media as a powerful tool for self-expression and communication by creating five-minute film legacies. Pairing participants with noted directors, writers, actors and producer mentors, Make A Film Foundation provides them with the tools, resources and guidance to reclaim the media and give them a voice. Moondance 2012 will be screening “Put it in a Book”, a short film produced by MAFF, and directed by Rodrigo Garcia.

Young people facing illness and long-term hospitalization naturally feel marginalized from the world. Many spend vast amounts of time watching television, experiencing realities they may never share. Make a Film Foundation provides these young people an opportunity to reclaim the media as a tool for creative expression and personal empowerment. At Make a Film Foundation we believe that creativity and self-expression are innately therapeutic.

For a critically ill child or teen, in all reality the best we can do is help them discover a sense of meaning or purpose. Make a Film Foundation will help young people facing illness use their dreams and imagination to explore and give voice to answers that no one else can offer. Make a Film Foundation demonstrates that within every young person, no matter how ill, there is power; power to create beauty and meaning out of seemingly senseless situations, to speak with a strong voice, and most importantly to grasp the dream of a bright future and always keep it in sight as their journey unfolds. http://www.makeafilmfoundation.org/index.html

A story of grace, redemption and powerful women. These influential women have endured unspeakable tragedy and want to share their story through their own very personal way and art to help change lives and help others heal. WHAT A WONDERFUL WORLD!

with David Attenborough, BBC One

http://www.youtube.com/embed/auSo1MyWf8g?rel=0

It’s a Wonderful World for my Fishing Buddies! I really did enjoy that video! Those whistling swans get me every time.  The wild geese here know me and walk into my camps at every lake where I fish. I toss leftover  bread that I roll into little balls. The gander will stand there on guard until the little ones and mother goose have fed, before he takes his turn.  When a stranger comes around, they will honk at me to let me know.  Once, when I was working on a screenplay inside my truck parked in the shade, with my back to the water, they started honking.  Looking down the trail I didn’t see anyone. One goose flew over my rod and reel. The fishing rod bounced really hard. The honking got louder, “Oh, no,” I thought. “A goose has gotten entangled in my line.”  I closed my laptop and ran to my bouncing rod.  It wasn’t a goose, but I fought and caught a 7 lb. blue catfish.  Later when I cooked it in the skillet, the geese stood around waiting for scraps.  My fishin’ buddies.” ~ Michael L. Edwards, Oklahoma Roughneck, award-winning screenwriter & composer/lyricist/singer

IN MEMORY OF PHYLLIS DILLER: Miss Diller was gracious enough to attend the Moondance International Film Festival in Hollywood, in 2007, where she was presented with the Moondance Living Legacy Award, and where she entertained the enthusiastic audience with her usual wit and unique brand of humor. She not only motivated and inspired a generation of women, such as Ellen DeGeneres, Kathy Griffin, Roseanne Barr, and Whoopi Goldberg, she blazed the way for them.

By now, this uniquely creative short film from Edmonton has traveled to more than 20 major international film festivals and charmed audiences across the globe. • “I just want you to know that I really appreciate all of this advice/help.  It still just stuns me. The last week has been such an incredible education for us here. Our films are watched throughout Micronesia, as we are the only ones doing this kind of stuff.” ~ Jack Niedenthal, filmmaker, screenwriter, Marshall Islands

HERE’S SOME GOOD NEWS!

Photo from The New York Times

GOSHEN, Connecticut, USA (AP) July 21, 2012– The birth of a white bison, among the rarest of animals, is bringing Native Americans who consider it a sacred event to celebrate at one of the least likely of places, a farm in New England.

Hundreds of people, including tribal elders from South Dakota, are expected to attend naming ceremonies later this month at the northwestern Connecticut farm of Peter Fay, a fourth-generation Goshen farmer.

Native Americans in the area have come with gifts of tobacco and colored flags for Fay and the bull calf since it was born there a month ago, and Fay is planning to offer his hay field as a campsite for the expected crowds.

“They say it’s going to bring good things to all people in the world!” Marian White Mouse, a member of the Oglala Lakota tribe in South Dakota, said the birth of a white bison is a sign from a prophet, the White Buffalo Calf Woman, who helps us endure times of strife and famine.

ATTENTION MUST BE PAID!

ELEPHANTS ARE STILL BEING SLAUGHTERED BY POACHERS

There are many ways to describe elephants: magnificent, highly intelligent, and tough. And if we aren’t careful, there could soon be another short word on this list: gone. The skyrocketing price of illegal ivory has ignited an escalating crime spree with elephant poachers and criminal traffickers at the center. It’s been growing steadily worse, and last year an unprecedented number of these gentle giants were slaughtered for their ivory. Humans have put elephants in this mess, and it’s our task to get them out. To protect elephants across Africa and Asia from being killed, we need to intervene immediately. Please consider a timely donation to the Wildlife Conservation Society!

VANISHING BEES!

Honeybees have been mysteriously disappearing across the planet, literally vanishing from their hives. Known as Colony Collapse Disorder, this phenomenon has brought beekeepers to crisis in an industry responsible for producing apples, broccoli, watermelon, onions, cherries and  hundreds of other fruits and vegetables. Commercial honeybee operations pollinate crops that make up one out of every three bites of food on our tables. In less than a month it will be – National Honeybee Day!  Celebrate our Precious Honeybees on August 21st. Our golden winged friends need your help now more than ever. The systemic pesticide clothianidin has been shown to play a major role in the dire crisis in honeybee health. Despite a hive of hard work calling for a ban on clothianidin, the EPA recently gave the systemic pesticide a continued go-ahead. This is sad news and shows us that it’s really up to each and every one of us to be the change we want to see in the world. Thanks for being a part of the solution. The time to raise awareness is now! http://www.vanishingbees.com/

We’ve all seen the agonizing photos of hunger – children with empty eyes, starving and hopeless. Their haunted looks beg for help. But thanks to the ongoing efforts of HEIFER, INTERNATIONAL, many of these children and families now have the light of self-reliance and hope in their eyes, where once there was despair. Please visit the website to see the world through the eyes of those who have broken the cycle of dependence and poverty. It’s not only what they are given, but what they do with it. Yet there are so many others around the world who are still waiting to be given the chance to transform their lives. Please consider a meaningful gift for yourself, a friend or a family member, by donating, in someone’s name, a gift of new life, at Heifer International now. For just $10 – $25 a share, you can give a family a goat, a pig, rabbits, a flock of chickens or geese, seeds, a hive of honeybees, a camel, or even a grove of fruit or nut trees!

A World Without Coral Reefs

By Roger Bradbury, NY Times, July 13, 2012

coral reef image from: science.howstuffworks.com

It’s past time to tell the truth about the state of the world’s coral reefs, the nurseries of tropical coastal fish stocks. They have become zombie ecosystems, neither dead nor truly alive in any functional sense, and on a trajectory to collapse within a human generation. There will be remnants here and there, but the global coral reef ecosystem — with its storehouse of biodiversity and fisheries supporting millions of the world’s poor — will cease to be.

Overfishing, ocean acidification and pollution are pushing coral reefs into oblivion. The scientific evidence for this is compelling and unequivocal. Overfishing can bring down reefs because fish are one of the key functional groups that hold reefs together. Ocean acidification can also bring down reefs because it affects the corals themselves. (And) unstoppable pollution will force reefs beyond their survival envelope by mid-century. It will be a tragedy for global conservation, as hot spots of biodiversity are destroyed. Coral reefs will be the first, but certainly not the last, major ecosystem to succumb to the Anthropocene — the new geological epoch now emerging. (text excerpted from the NYT article) For more info & how you can help: Coral Reef Alliance A non-profit organization working to keep coral reefs alive!

News from New York City: Fed by the interest in locally grown produce, the new farm operations in New York are selling greens and other vegetables by the boxful to organically inclined residents, and by the bushel to supermarket chains like Whole Foods. The main difference between this century and previous ones is location: whether soil-based or hydroponic, in which vegetables are grown in water rather than soil, the new farms are spreading on rooftops, perhaps the last slice of untapped real estate in the city. “In terms of rooftop commercial agriculture, New York is definitely a leader at this moment,” said Joe Nasr, co-author of “Carrot City: Creating Places for Urban Agriculture”. Rooftop farms have the potential to capture millions of gallons of storm water and divert it from the sewer system, which can overflow when it rains. And harvesting produce in the boroughs means fewer trucks on local roadways and lower greenhouse gas emissions, a goal of Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg’s administration(Excerpted from a NY Times article by Lisa W. Foderaro.)

PARKOUR is the physical discipline of training to overcome any obstacle within one’s path by adapting to the environment within your personal obstacle course. It’s a playground for building strength, freedom, courage and discipline. Parkour is an international discipline that is best described as the art of forward motion in spite of obstacles, or to put it simply: the art of purposeful movement. Parkour’s chief aim is to never move backward, but instead to overcome obstacles fluidly, with strength, originality and speed. It emphasizes the integration of the human mind and body to overcome obstacles, and gain victory over one’s fears and weaknesses. Friends can challenge each other to improve upon their most recent efforts, and feed off each other’s energy and achievements, as they seek new boundaries to break, within a loose and perfectly amicable framework. Filmmakers use a form of parkour when they track long action scenes over the terrain. A mental form of parkour can be learned, practiced and utilized to overcome obstacles in one’s life and career!

The MWP publication, “FILMMAKING FOR CHANGE, How to Make Films That Transform the World”, by Jon Fitzgerald, book soon to be released, is a marvel, a revelation, and a must-read, for film buffs, indie filmmakers, film festival programmers, studio heads, film distributors, and screenwriters! This important book entertains, informs, inspires, encourages and educates the reader. Filmmakers, writers and composers are vocal and active participants in the social forces that can shape our culture. Films, scripts and music can all greatly contribute to a healthier society, and these creative works should encourage the active involvement of audiences to connect and act collectively to address social and environmental challenges. • “A huge thanks to you again for selecting “skew” as a feature film semi-finalist at your fest last year. We have gone on to much success with the film since the 2011 Moondance International Film Festival and I truly believe being attached to your awesome fest helped us out on our amazing journey. So far, we have been accepted in just under 50 festivals, had great reviews, and won 7 awards. In addition to this, “skew” has been sold to Netflix in the US, (and many other countries). I think you have a great festival, and I look forward to seeing it continue to grow stronger with every new year.” ~ Sevé Schelenz, writer/director – “skew”

  • “I was a quarter finalist, (about) 10 years ago for my script, Flying Lessons. I just wanted to say how much your festival has grown and how impressive it is! Really great job. I am still writing, and just completed a two-year deal with Paramount for a script I co- wrote, called Shopping for Boys. I’m considering entering a pilot in your festival. I just wanted to touch base, say hello and kudos to you.” ~ Rachel Naples, screenwriter

  • “Thank you for all the information, helpful tips, and insightful thoughts you give us on the monthly news blog. I am delighted to hear that the festival will be held in New York City. I have been there twice. Love it! It is such a great place to celebrate. So, I will just hop over the Atlantic Ocean. Looking forward to meeting you, dear Moondancers.” ~ Christine Doris Schmidt, Screenwriter, Germany
  • I wanted to thank you for all the great feedback you gave me for Hockey Night In Cromdale in our email exchange…I am honored that you liked it…It means a lot to me, as the story was written in memory of many people I have known and many friends whom I loved. Thank you so much again for everything and best wishes for another successful festival.”~ Penny Frazier, Canada, screenwiter

  • I’m currently traveling in SE Asia for the next months on a writing retreat…I’ve looked at your impressive website and felt an immediate affinity. Clearly, you have done your inner-work and now moving strongly into the outer. I am in the process of doing the same…So we are kindred spirits walking along the same path, and, based on my travels, I can tell you, as you already know, there are many of us around the globe! I will send your info to my videography group. I’ve already signed up for your blog and look forward to getting to know you better.”~ Jia Gottlieb MD, www.theturningstone.org (an unusual and talented group of people from many walks of life, who share a common destiny – and burden: to change the course of our family lineage, ourselves and the world)

MOONDANCERS WRITE US!

• “Moondance International Film Festival looks deeply meaningful and exciting! As an award-winning filmmaker, artist, and author of articles about how to transform patriarchy, I believe in the power of creativity to transform lives. I think you—with your belief in the ability of film to raise awareness, educate, inspire new ways of seeing the world, ourselves and others, and create great social change— (and) celebrating the transformative power of creativity, (which can be) used to promote creativity as an alternative to violence.” ~ Imogene Drummond, filmmaker

• “Thank you for your article “Two Brads or Three?” on your website (E-Zine). It was more than helpful; it was encouraging and honest. Your observations were keen, yet your arms were open and welcoming. The great thing about your article is it has really helped me rethink how I should enter any screenplay contest – in many ways, but especially in not waiting till final deadlines. And, after reading your words, I submitted to your film festival screenplay competition and plan to mail the script today.” ~ Amy Bailey, screenwriter

• “I read your article on the Moondance website, “Two Brads or Three” and I thought it was lovely. It made me want to enter your screenplay contest – so this Monday, I will.” ~ Amy Rhinehart Bailey (OC Screenwriters group)

• “I am once again so overwhelmed by the beauty, sensitivity, information, helpful tips, beautiful photography, and artwork in your blog, that I felt compelled to write to you immediately. You have, as usual, put together a news blog of wonderfully helpful information done as a work of art itself. As an artist and a writer, I am most appreciative of your marvelous achievement. I also know how much effort and care you take in helping writers and artists.” Lorna Kanter, screenwriter

DID YOU KNOW…?

Wild Dolphin Family, Bimini, photo by Atmo, Wildquest.com

DOLPHIN CATASTROPHE IN PERU: Since January more than 900 dolphins have been found dead on the beaches of northern Peru. The Peruvian government conducted only perfunctory necropsies and testing then came out with the conclusion that the mass mortality event (MME) was caused by “natural causes”. This conclusion is patently absurd.

BlueVoice traveled to Peru in March, 2012 to document the large numbers of dolphins dead on beaches. We counted 615 in just one day. Dr. Carlos Yaipen Llanos of ORCA Peru, funded by BlueVoice.org, has conducted necropsies on 30 of these dolphins. He has found no evidence of disease, starvation, entanglement in nets or red tide. There were no marks or lesions on the exterior of the stranded dolphins. What he has found is evidence of acoustical trauma leading to rapid ascent and decompression syndrome. In other words loud noises, produced repeatedly over a long period of time, startled the dolphins who raced for the surface and incurred what humans call the bends.

Over the next eight years – according to the Obama administration’s estimates – seismic exploration would injure up to 138,500 marine mammals and disrupt marine mammal feeding, calving, breeding, and other vital activities more than 13.5 million times. This could be catastrophic for the dolphins and whales we all love.

It is vitally important that we continue our work in Peru and that we inject this new evidence to stop the seismic testing off the U.S. coast BlueVoice has been the major funder of the work in Peru. Please donate and help us prevent future disasters.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT MOONDANCE:

  • As Moondance’s founder, executive director & artistic director, I have had the rare pleasure of personally previewing and judging every single film, reading all screenplays and other written works, and listening to all music and film scores submitted to the annual competition.
  • I have selected all the films to be screened and all the winners in every category, and have done so, successfully, from the very first Moondance, in 2000.
  • I do not travel to other film festivals looking for films to invite. In the rare event that a very special film is invited to be screened at Moondance, it is clearly labeled as “invited”, and it can have no chance of winning an award. Only submitted films have that opportunity.
  • When submitting your work to the Moondance annual competition, you can be 100% assured that it will be carefully previewed and judged fairly.

FILMMAKERS & COMPOSERS: DID YOU KNOW?

MUSIC IN FILM!

By Elizabeth English

Music! Ah, yes. The power of music in film. A feature film needs at least 30 to 40 minutes of music, which is one of the most important elements in a successful film.

A film score can be artfully used to:

  • AROUSE
  • MANIPULATE
  • FRIGHTEN
  • SOOTHE & CALM
  • AID IN TRANSITIONS
  • PUNCTUATE A MOMENT OR SCENE
  • COMMENT
  • MOVE THE PLOT ALONG
  • FOCUS & ARTICULATE
  • ADD A SENSE OF CONTINUITY
  • ADD INFORMATION
  • HEIGHTEN THE TEMPO
  • ADD DRAMATIC TENSION
  • ADD TO COMEDIC ELEMENTS
  • CHANGE THE MOOD
  • ADD CHARACTER
  • DEFINE A SCENE OR CHARACTER
  • ADD DIMENSION
  • GIVE THE FILM NEW OR DIFFERENT MEANING

And you thought only the film director, DP, editor, and the actors did all that?!

The major categories of a film score are:

  • THEME, such as the musical theme from James Bond films
  • SOURCE, as from a radio or a band shown on screen.
  • MOVIE SONG, as the music from “Titanic”.
  • UNDERSCORING, soft, “seen but not heard” music
  • DEVELOPMENTAL or NARRATIVE music, which adds to story as it unfolds, weaving in and out, through the film.
  • COUNTERPOINT MUSIC, adds to contrast, adds conflict
  • FORESHADOWING, sets up for the next scene
  • OVERTURE, the central core. Sets mood, sets time, sets location.
  • LEITMOTIF, which identifies a character or repeated action on screen, such as the scary tune in “Jaws”, when the shark is about to appear.

"Jaws", Universal Pictures, Steven Spielberg, director

Along with a good screenplay, directing, editing, camera-work, and great dialog, music is what really makes a film memorable! Composing film scores, arranging and selecting music are vital crafts and elements that contribute to making the “Dream Factory” world of the film believable to movie audiences!

Thanks a million to all of you Moondancers who have contributed this season and in the past! Without your support, we wouldn’t be here. And as our progressive, independent, pro-active voice reaches more people – via the art of film, writing and music, and providing encouragement, reliable information, critical thought and creative ideas — more audiences, artists and activists are entertained, informed and inspired.

The films, written works and music we receive reinforce our belief that for those artists, and for many of you, Moondance International Film Festival, with our mandate for integrity, the highest quality, and our mission, is an essential part of a progressive future.
