 HOW TO GET AN AGENT!

What Agents Want (and Don’t Want) to See

By Elizabeth English*

 2 PENGUINS ON ICE

First, call, email or write to literary agents who are listed as being willing to look at unsolicited screenplays, or who are looking for new clients. Tell them  what you have and would like to send to them, for their consideration. Do not send a script unless you are invited to do so!

HOW TO FIND LISTED AGENTS:
  • The Hollywood Creative Directory’s Agent/Management directory
  • Writers Digest
  • Writers Guild of America (East & West)
GUIDELINES FOR GETTING AN AGENT:

1. Write killer titles, loglines and one-sheet synopses for the all the scripts you want to submit to agents.

2. Write up a one-sheet document with titles and loglines of all your completed  screenplays. You may be asked to send these before sending in a screenplay.

3. Presentation of script: be sure to have a plain cardstock cover, front and back; a title page with all your contact info; three-hole punch white paper; two solid-brass brads in the top and bottom hole only.

4. You may be asked to submit your script digitally, via email. In that case, ask if the agent wants it in a screenwriting program, such as Final Draft, or as a .pdf.

5. In any case, always be sure to register your script with WGAw or WGAe, and/or copyright it before sending it out!

6. “Attachments”, in the form of interested actors, director, producer, and most importantly: money, to your project, will always help get almost any agent interested. Mention this, if applicable, in your cover letter. But don’t send a “wish-list” of actors, director, etc.

7. If you’ve had a film or films produced from other screenplays you’ve written, definitely mention this in your cover letter.

8. Getting your screenplay to an agent is a 4-step process. Be patient!

9. Have more than one screenplay completed. At least three of your best screenplays need to be completed and ready to go, when and if requested.

10. In your initial phone call or e-mail, try to find out what genre of story that agent is looking for, at the moment. Agents generally know exactly what the buyers and/or producers want to see, and will usually only request those genres. But needs change all the time, and at a moment’s notice, so let them know what you have, even if they’re not looking for that at the time of your call or email.

11. Story: This is the first thing agents look at, when considering whether to read your script or not. Write a unique story, well-told.

12. Writing ability and style. Everything depends on this.

13. Dialog: your ability to write good, memorable and believable dialog is paramount.

14. Format and structure: in submitting your work to an agent, you should be sure the script is in proper format and structure. There are many books and online articles on these vital subjects.

15. Print out your script and read it in hard-copy, checking every word and every line for typos, edits needed, and etc.

16. Submit a reader’s script, not a production script! No camera angles or technical suggestions. Don’t use (continued) or (con’t.) after every character name and scene or bottom & top of each page.

17. Remember, you’re the writer, not the director, director of photography, costumer, set director, producer, cinematographer, lighting director, editor, music director, and so on.

18. Budget: yes, a screenwriter needs to know about this. Many buyers are looking for specific subjects with very specific production budgets. Currently, a low-budget feature film will be $10-20 million, for example. If your script requires action scenes and/or CGI graphics, double that figure.

19. If you know The Business at all, and have experience and/or good contacts, make the agent aware of this, so he or she will know you are a professional.

20. Let the prospective agent know you are open to re-writes and edits of your scripts. You will always be asked to do re-writes, edits, revisions and polishes, sometimes “on spec”, so prepare yourself mentally and be agreeable to it.

21. Be willing and able to pitch your screenplay to production companies and studios, with the agent, in person. If you live far from L.A., or NY, let the agent know you can arrange to go there for pitching appointments. Try to schedule more than one pitch meeting at a time.

22. Be friendly and easy-going, yet professional and self-confident. Hollywood, even though it’s a “snake-pit” at times, is run on connections and contacts. If they don’t like you, and don’t feel they can work with you, you don’t have a chance there, no matter how good your script is.

23. Be honest! Never, ever hype yourself or your script unless the information is absolutely true & provable. If you’ve won a contest with your script, let them know.

24. And if you’ve been submitting your scripts around to everybody for years, and they ask, tell the truth. Production companies and studios keep lists of what has been submitted to them, and you don’t want to embarrass your new agent!

  1. HOW TO GET “DISCOVERED”:
  • InkTip.com is a the best website on which to post your scripts, to be seen by many agents, producers, managers, development  & acquisition executives
  • LinkedIn.com is a good social networking site for making entertainment industry contacts & networking
  • If you live in or near Los Angeles, attend parties, special film screenings, film festivals, and other events where Hollywood types will be.
  • Enter the top film festival competitions with your best work, and win!
  • If you do win a contest, add that info to your cover letter!
WHAT SHOULD AN AGENT DO FOR YOU? ~ Send out your loglines and one sheet synopses, and scripts to Development & Acquisition executives at production companies and studios ~ Give suggestions on potential edits, revisions and re-writes that may be needed to sell the script ~ Set up pitch sessions for you at production companies and studios ~  Get the best deal he or she can for you, at or above schedule of WGA minimums. ~ Encourage and inspire you to create new material and projects. ~ An agent should NOT charge you any reading or consultation fees, nor for any expenses incurred for promoting you or your script. The agent will be compensated from his or her 10 or 15 % of the sale of your script.   WHAT AGENTS DO NOT WANT TO SEE:
  • A script sent to them “cold”, with no phone call, e-mail or letter first
  • A script that is too long (over 120 pages), or too short (under 90 pages)
  • A script that is bound incorrectly (no brads, no cover, no title page)
  • A script that is not formatted correctly & has grammatical and/or spelling errors
  • A cover letter that is more than one page long
  • A script that is mostly descriptions of people and locations, like a novel
  • A script with unrealistic or stilted/boring dialog
  • A script where the real action of the story begins late, after page 10 or 20
  • A script with more than 100 scenes (each scene costs money)
  • A script with a prospective production budget over that what is requested
  • A script that has a lot of well-known copyrighted music noted in the text.
  • A script that is not in the genre requested
  • A writer who is unwilling to consider re-writes, revisions and edits
  • A script that has any typos, misspellings or poor syntax
  • A script without conflicts in the plot and story-line
  • A script without interesting, memorable characters
  • A story without character development
  • A storyline that has been done a million times
  • An incomplete screenplay
  • A script that is not in proper screenplay format
  • A script that has been shopped around for years
  • A writer who calls or e-mails sooner than 2 weeks after the agent received the script

If and when you do call an agent, after you’ve sent your query letter, title & logline, and synopsis, then the screenplay, if requested, and waiting at least two weeks to get a response, don’t put the agent on the spot by calling or emailing to ask, “Did you get my screenplay? Did you read it? Did you like it?” Ask, instead, “Have you had a chance to take a look at (title of screenplay)?” If the agent or assistant or intern says “not yet”, and he or she probably will, ask when it might be OK to call or email again to follow up, and then wait to call until that date. IF the agent says “It’s not for us.”, thank them for their time, and ask if you can send another script, or a rewrite. THE CARE & FEEDING OF YOUR NEW AGENT:

OK, you’ve finally gotten a good professional agent, preferably one associated with the Writers Guild, and who is excited about your work. Congratulations! You need to treat him or her well, don’t call or email all the time to find out what’s going on with your script(s). Your new agent also has many other clients to promote. Be nice, trust your agent. It’s like getting a new best friend, and you want to keep on his or her good side, making sure the person likes and respects you. The agent will work for you to sell your script to a production company and/or studio…that’s how both of you get paid. SUGGESTED READING & RESOURCES:

Moondance film fest relocates to Mystic

By Kristina Dorsey

J2THE DAY LOGO?

The Moondance International Film Festival, which has run since 2000 in Boulder, Colorado, is moving to a new home: Mystic.

Founder, Elizabeth English, who lives in Colorado, had been looking for a new site and considered Mystic a potential location. Then, Stonington resident and filmmaker Hans Hartman contacted her via Linked In, seeking advice about starting a film festival in southeastern Connecticut. The two now are collaborating on Moondance’s 2013 event, which will be held here Sept. 26-29.

Screenings will happen in Olde Mistick Village Art Cinemas. Workshops, networking events and other programs might be held at such venues as the Mystic Aquarium and the Mashantucket Pequot Museum, Hartman says.

English and Hartman say that expected to come to Moondance are Giancarlo Esposito, who starred as Gus on “Breaking Bad” and Tom Neville in “Revolution,” and Linda Vilhjalmsdottir, line producer for “Game of Thrones,” who will give a master-class on line producing. READ MORE:

Nonviolent film fest moving to Mystic

By MICHAEL SOUZA / Mystic Press Writer

Monday, July 15, 2013

MYSTIC — The Moondance International Film Festival, known for featuring artistic and socially aware movies, is moving from Boulder, Colo., to Mystic as of Sept. 26-29.

“This is the festival’s new home. We plan to stay in Mystic a long, long time,” Hans Hartman of Stonington, director of the festival, said in a telephone interview. “Mystic is such an arts-based community,” he said. “It also has a history with films such as ‘Mystic Pizza’ and ‘Hope Springs.’ The festival will add to that connection. We are very happy to be here.” READ MORE:

NOTE: The paper has printed a correction, at my request: Elizabeth English is the founder, executive director, artistic director, and co-producer of the annual Moondance International Film Festival, which is moving from Boulder, Colo., to Mystic in September. The festival promotes nonviolent conflict resolution and encourages alternatives to violence through many of the films that are screened. In addition to her festival work, English is an award-winning filmmaker, producer, director, screenwriter and playwright, an acting and voice coach, and a professional consultant on screenplays, films and music for film. Her background was incorrectly described in the Monday edition of The Sun.

 J2BEE & FLOWER

Across the USA, millions of bees are dying, threatening our food supply. Scientists blame one group of pesticides some of which have just been banned in Europe. A new bill could save America’s bees, but big Agriculture and the pesticide industry are lobbying hard against it. America’s bees are facing a chemical Armageddon — just last week, 50,000 bees died in a single car park in Oregon after being exposed to pesticides, and last winter over 50% of all California’s bees died! The evidence is so compelling that the entire European Union has begun banning them, and the Save America’s Pollinators Act could impose a ban on these deadly poisons in the US.

Bees don’t just make honey, they are vital to life on earth, every year pollinating 95 types of fruits such as avocados, almonds, apples, and that’s just the A’s. Without immediate action to save bees, many of our favorite fruits, vegetables, and nuts could vanish forever. And without bees pollinating plants that feed farm animals and forage for wildlife, those animals would starve & die, too.

We only have days to make sure Congress acts to stop the Chemical Armageddon – sign the emergency petition now! Sign the petition below and tell everyone — when we reach 250,000 signers, we’ll take Avaaz’s giant inflatable bee to Capitol Hill to tell Congress to save our bees:

COMMENTARY: SCREEN VIOLENCE AND THE REAL WORLD

By Greg Desilet, 07/20/2013 Daily Camera, Boulder, Colorado

When living in a culture of violence, it is not surprising that people should believe there is no connection between violent screen entertainment and real world violence. As many sociologists and commentators have argued, American culture mythologizes and extols the virtue of “regeneration through violence”.

In the 20th century film and television have confirmed and re-enforced this mythology through entertainment featuring the heroic overcoming of villainy through the use of deadly violence (name your favorite superhero!). These productions have joined together the notions of violence, justice, and celebration.

To suppose, as entertainment executives do, that this message has nothing to do with American attitudes toward conflict, violence, and gun culture is not only extraordinarily myopic but disturbingly oblivious to the history and trajectory of American culture to which these executives so blithely contribute. And to suppose that this message has no impact on real life behaviors runs fantastically counter to the parallel and contrary belief in the potency of promotional advertising messages.

Producers and studios acknowledge this potency with every dollar spent on promotion of films and television shows, not to mention the belief in the potency of advertising in general which provides the basis for network television. If media ads, in their brevity and simplicity, can be relied on to have effects in the marketplace, why does anyone suppose that more extensive film and television productions highlighting violence produce no effects?

The truth is that depictions of violence in film and television have profound and lasting effects at the cultural level of attitudes toward violence and the resolution of conflict.  ~ Greg Desilet is the author of the soon-to-be-published “Screens of Blood: A Critical Approach to Film and Television Violence.”

MYSTIC WELCOME SIGN MYSTIC RIVER

Moondance has been held in Hollywood at Universal Studios and in New York City at the Tribeca Cinemas, as well as in Boulder, Colorado, the festival’s original home. The film festival has also  been invited to relocate to many other locations, such as Malibu; NYC; San Antonio, TX; St. Petersburg, Russia; Sydney, Australia; London; Paris; Kauai, HI; Prince Edward Island, Canada, and many others, but I gladly selected the historic seaside village of Mystic, Connecticut, as the very best destination and new home for the Moondance, because of Mystic’s unique New England location between New York City and Boston, its culture, and its heartfelt welcoming ambience. Make A Film Foundation grants film wishes to children with serious or life-threatening medical conditions, helping them to create short film legacies by teaming them with noted actors, directors and writers. We believe the art of filmmaking is not only healing and therapeutic, but also offers hope and builds self-esteem. The children get to write and star in their own short film. In our ‘Vidz 4 Kidz’ program, we go into various hospitals and facilities, teaming the children with hand-held video cameras and film mentors who help them to create ‘mini-movies’ about their lives and their challenges. RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD

“The Rufous Hummingbird was common when we were kids. But it’s just one of dozens of familiar bird species headed for trouble. A Rufous Hummingbird weighs less than a French fry and can fly 1,000 miles, without food or rest. They may be mighty mites, but there’s one challenge they may not be able to overcome: us. National Audubon Society scientists estimate that the global population of these amazing flyers has declined nearly 60% in the past three decades.

What’s pushing hummingbirds toward the brink? A deadly combination of habitat destruction, toxic pollution and the spread of invasive plants. And now a new threat may overshadow them all: ecological chaos caused by a warming climate. Warmer weather prompts earlier flowering of nectar-bearing plants that hummingbirds rely on during their epic migrations. If the flowers are gone before the birds arrive, they may starve.

Will our children and grandchildren grow up with the wonder of watching a hummingbird hover over the flowerbed or sip nectar from a backyard feeder?

GRASS & WILDFLOWERS

“We have it backwards. We think that when we overcome difficulty, then we will be happy, but it’s happiness itself that delivers us from chaos.

Happiness is being able to dance through the difficult times, and learn what they are here to teach us. Your potential is waiting for you in the challenges you will choose to face. A desire for bigger things is good if it propels us to nurture the blessings in our own life, and to do the work necessary to create even more.

MOONDANCE SELECTED AS ONE OF THE

Top Women’s Film Festivals in the World!

by Madeline Wickman in Indie Tips, Producing Tips

Moondance International Film Festival – This festival stays true to their original goal to present films and writings which successfully raise awareness about a variety of vital social issues. Besides their feminist initiatives, other objectives include educating writers, filmmakers, and film festival audiences, and inspiring them to take action upon this knowledge. Moondance uses this entertainment media to stimulate social and environmental change. Having initially started to widen the knowledge of the hardships women face, as the festival has matured, it has also expanded the social issues it promotes.

Women’s film festivals aim to provide a true perception of women, whether they are victorious or defeated. With an industry that is dominated by males, these film festivals have turned into a global project by, for and about women.

The criteria I used to select these top film festivals are similar to those that could be used for general film festivals. The one defining quality is that the festival, in fact, promotes what it actually is. Women’s film festivals began due to the lack of female voice within the film industry. To combat this hindrance, their own film festival was designed.

If women’s film festivals don’t promote the issue that women aren’t in the industry, no one will listen and nothing will change. Individuals involved have the opportunity to call attention to the fact that, while just as many women may be going into film studies and other forms of film education, men still dominate the field. These festivals are attended by individuals who are likely to be the most sensitive and passionate about the issue. If you can’t make them care, no one will.

I’d also like to applaud broadening efforts that most of these festivals are making. They have acknowledged more than just the suppression that women face, and now work to challenge many other discriminatory disputes. It’s no longer feminist banter to promote more women in the film industry. Women film festivals are facilitating new perspectives against other minority populations as well.

CLARIFYING THE MOONDANCE STATEMENT ON NON-VIOLENCE:

The goal of Moondance is not to unrealistically refuse to acknowledge violence in the world, but to offer, where possible, alternatives to it, and to actively promote peaceful, non-violent conflict resolution. We have screened winning films at Moondance, and written works have won awards, which show violent scenes. We just prefer to promote possible alternatives, and to show how violent conflict-resolution is usually counter-productive. But a historical scene of a killing, in a duel, for example, or a war, and so on, is acceptable at Moondance. It is depictions of gratuitous violence, and killing for the sake of a thrill, that we object to considering at the Moondance.

DINNER WITH THE SMILEYS:

One Military Family, One Year of Heroes,

and Lessons for a Lifetime

Click on the book cover

Fifty-two guests take turns filling a military father’s chair at his family’s dinner table while he serves his yearlong deployment. The week before Thanksgiving 2011, Dustin Smiley left for a yearlong military deployment. Soon after, his son Ford, eleven, invited Senator Susan Collins to fill his dad’s chair at dinner.

Amazon.com review: Dinner With The Smileys Is A Must Read This is such an incredible and touching story. It speaks to the relationship between a mom and her sons. It’s beyond filling a seat at dinner, it’s about relationships and lessons for a lifetime. You will laugh, shed a tear and feel like you’re part of this very special family and the adventures that surely changed their lives forever.

FILMS CHANGING THE WORLD!

This picture shows child activists working with Amlan Ganguly, marching through the streets of Calcutta using megaphones to spread health messages. These girls are from a documentary film called The Revolutionary Optimists by Nicole Newnham and Maren-Grainger-Monsen. Amlan Ganguly empowers children to become activists and educators, with powerful results. The Revolutionary Optimists follows him as he attempts to replicate his work in the brick fields outside the city, where children live and work in unimaginable conditions. Using street theater, puppetry, and dance as their weapons, the children in Calcutta’s slums have cut their neighborhoods’ malaria and diarrhea rates in half, and turned former garbage dumps into playing fields. Ganguly’s story suggests that education and child empowerment are crucial keys to lifting entire societies out of hopelessness. Co-presented by the Women’s Film Institute. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

“When we first come to study enlightenment, it is usually with the intention to help ourselves and to achieve serenity. We wish to become better people, and to live better, more meaningful lives. We want to have fewer negative thoughts, be less judgmental, and encounter fewer toxic relationships.

But at some point, a true student realizes that this endeavor is not about self-help. It’s about helping others. Improving our own lives is only the result of when we become a greater channel to improve the lives of others.

The real goal is to work toward the elevation of the entire world.”  ~ EE & YB ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

We know that dolphins, porpoises and whales are much more intelligent and sentient than most humans realize. This message is being echoed by tens of millions of people around the world because of movies like our Oscar-winning film, The Cove, and supporters like you. Film is a powerful way to evolve culture, but we still have so much more work to do. Our oceans continue to be assaulted by overfishing, pollution, habitat destruction and perhaps the worst threat of all, acidification. All of this is adding up to a mass species extinction like the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs 65 million year ago. Except this time, we are the asteroid.

Our next film tackles this issue head on. We’re doing it by telling a great story with a very compelling cast of characters–every day heroes–and then, like The Cove, bringing them together to a crescendo that illuminates the issue and the solutions on the biggest stage imaginable. When people ask me what the next film is about I tell them, “It’s just like The Avengers, only it’s real.” Many thanks to you all for helping us create a better world for not just humans, but for all Earthlings. ~~ Louie Psihoyos & the OPS Team Oceanic Preservation Society, Boulder, CO. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The Earth’s soils are living, dynamic interfaces that are habitats for millions of microbial and animal species. The activities of soil biota are critical to the wellbeing of human societies because their activities underpin the delivery of major ecosystem services. Soil organisms are responsible for ensuring that the nutrients necessary to produce the ear of corn that we will consume next year will be made available from last year’s roots and residues. They are also responsible for sustaining the soil’s capacity to provide us with food in the decades and centuries to come. All of this is very well known by scientists, but the majority of people are hardly aware of this critical role played by soil biota.

Glowing Millipedes found on Alcatraz Island

Sunday May 12, 2013 – New York Times author Jim Robbins highlights soil biodiversity and GSBI in an article The Hidden World Under Our Feet. Robbins describes the importance of soil biodiversity for maintaining healthy soil as well as the GSBI sponsored project in central park.  Soil biodiversity is receiving lots of attention in the media thanks to Dr. Diana Wall, GSBI Scientific Chair, receiving the Tyler prize. In the words of Dr. Wall “It’s showtime for soil biodiversity.”

FREE HUGS is a real-life controversial story of Juan Mann, A man whose sole mission was to reach out and hug a stranger to brighten up their lives. In this age of social dis-connectivity and lack of human contact, the effects of the Free Hugs campaign became phenomenal. As this symbol of human hope spread across the city, police and officials ordered the Free Hugs campaign BANNED. What we then witness is the true spirit of humanity come together in what can only be described as awe-inspiring. In the spirit of the free hugs campaign, PASS THIS TO A FRIEND and HUG A STRANGER! After all, If you can reach just one person…

MOONDANCE: BIG NEWS ANNOUNCEMENT FOR 2013!

wings

It’s the warm and sunny month of May! Now you can create a garden that is your peaceful sanctuary — a calm refuge from the stresses of everyday life, a soothing balm for heart and soul, a place of natural beauty to engage the senses, in which to go barefoot and connect with nature, where you can foster personal growth, serenity and spiritual awareness.

2013 MOONDANCE SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT:

Moondance has been offered the unique opportunity to hold the 2013 film festival event in Mystic, Connecticut!

Mystic, Connecticut, located mid-way between New York City and Boston, has the unique distinction of being one of the most popular tourist and vacation areas in New England. It’s a lovely small seaside town within easy driving distance to New York City, with big-city amenities – great seafood restaurants, a lively arts and music scene, and the historic Olde Mystic Village. Mystic has become known for its quintessential New England charm, as well as its two world-class attractions: Mystic Seaport, the world’s largest maritime museum, and the Mystic Aquarium, featuring fascinating creatures from both sea and land, as well as the exhibits of Dr. Robert Ballard, discoverer of the Titanic. Mystic also has beautiful beaches, a lighthouse, and now, Mystic can boast that it’s the new home of the Moondance International Film Festival & Market!

Please give a very warm welcome to Moondance’s 2013 Festival Director & Marketing Director, the talented and award-winning Mystic filmmaker and producer, Hans Hartman! Hans is the new Festival Director for the Moondance International Film Festival and is building the premiere Moondance Film Market, for filmmakers, writers & music composers, and for entertainment industry buyers & sellers.

Hans Hartman

He has been in the entertainment industry since 1968, and has worked in almost every stage of the production process. In 1978, Hans started working behind the camera and started editing film in the mid 1970’s and video in the early 1980’s. As the digital migration came about, he learned several NLE systems and became an expert on FCP Studio Suite. Hans taught 35mm filmmaking at a prestigious college, in Florida, and created “The Young Filmmaker’s Workshop” in Orlando, FL.

Hartman has hundreds of film, television and commercial projects to his credit. In 2002, Hans formed a new production company to focus on film and digital cinema, called H2Films. Hans has also been recognized by the State of Connecticut and appointed to the Advisory Board of the Department of Economic and Community Development. Currently, he is working on producing a slate of films in the mid-range. Using his knowledge of independent filmmaking techniques and new media, he is able to keep quality high and prices reasonable. Hans is passionate about building the infrastructure needed to bring more films & filmmakers to Connecticut.

A MOONDANCER WRITES US:

“Elizabeth, I’m writing to let you know that I just finished my second screenplay, using the methods and writing secrets that you exposed me to on my first screenplay. Your critique of my work was dead-on. The common sense – no nonsense approach brings out the details and cuts out the fluff. I’m very proud of both of my screenplays now, which could not have been so well-written without your tutelage. I’m confident that I have achieved a much higher plane of quality screenwriting since your professional evaluation via 7seas Productions. My first screenplay is already being considered by a production company! THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH” ~ Michael L. Edwards, Moondance award-winning screenwriter and music composer

Oceana: Our Endangered Oceans and What We Can Do to Save Them

by Ted Danson & Michael D’Orso

Most people know Ted Danson as the affable bartender Sam Malone in the long-running television series Cheers. But fewer realize that over the course of the past two and a half decades, Danson has tirelessly devoted himself to the cause of heading off a looming global catastrophe—the massive destruction of our planet’s oceanic biosystems and the complete collapse of the world’s major commercial fisheries.

In Oceana, Danson details his journey from joining a modest local protest in the mid 1980s to oppose offshore oil drilling near his Southern California neighborhood to his current status as one of the world’s most influential oceanic environmental activists, testifying before congressional committees in Washington, D.C., addressing the World Trade Organization in Zurich, Switzerland, and helping found Oceana, the largest organization in the world focused solely on ocean conservation.

In his incisive, conversational voice, Danson describes what has happened to our oceans in just the past half-century, ranging from the ravages of over-fishing and habitat destruction to the devastating effects of ocean acidification and the wasteful horrors of fish farms. Danson also shares the stage of Oceana with some of the world’s most respected authorities in the fields of marine science, commercial fishing, and environmental law, as well as with other influential activists.

Combining vivid, personal prose with an array of stunning graphics, charts, and photographs, Oceana powerfully illustrates the impending crises and offers solutions that may allow us to avert them, showing you the specific courses of action you can take to become active, responsible stewards of our planet’s most precious resource—its oceans. SOME THINGS TO THINK ABOUT:

Guatemalan girl & tourist

“Though most of us consider ourselves to be people who share, we probably still fall into the trap of sharing with strings attached. We tend to give most to the people who give us love, friendship, or security in return.

If you really want to practice sharing without an agenda, give something to the person who has nothing to offer you.

Start with one person a week, then make it two. This is a powerful practice in growing our capacity for unconditional sharing.” ~ YEHUDA BERG, Kabbalahist

“Music creates order out of chaos: for rhythm imposes unanimity upon the divergent, melody imposes continuity upon the disjointed, and harmony imposes compatibility upon the incongruous. “ ~ YEHUDI MENUHIN, American violinist and conductor

“Taking note of how much we give or take energy can provide a gauge for where we are spiritually.

Examples of taking energy include: Watching TV, gossiping, overindulging, and complaining.

Examples of giving energy include: Volunteer efforts, creative outlets, positive new projects, and sharing support with a friend.

Isn’t it weird that the things we take energy from actually make us feel drained, whereas the ways in which we give make us more energized?

The way to get more energy is to give it!” ~ YEHUDA BERG

SOME THINGS TO THINK ABOUT:

“Wisdom can be an enormous support, whether you seek to be ahead of the curve, navigate stressful times, release repetitive patterns, bring more prosperity into your life, heal from illness, manifest love, or simply appreciate everyday moments. Wisdom gives you information, knowledge, and support to grow and change, so you can master challenges and achieve your highest potential.” ~ YEHUDA BERG

MOONDANCERS WRITE US:

“I find it far more challenging to make something quick and powerful. I really love your idea (to add film trailers to the contest). Short promotional pieces really are in a class by themselves and the artists and craftspeople, or just plain hobbyists who create them deserve to be recognized . A great “Hassah” for your intention! Rock on, Elizabeth!” ~ PETER LEWIS (from LinkedIn.com, on Moondance’s addition of film trailers to the 2013 competition)

“Thanks for all you do for the industry to promote well-being (what a challenge!).” ~ CHESLEY LYDEKKER, screenwriter, multi-media filmmaker

“Elizabeth! Your enthusiasm, drive, and positive energy is inspiring!” ~ RICHARD “RB” BOTTO, CEO, www.Stage32.com, popular entertainment industry networking site

Moondancer, Earl D. James’ new award-winning novel:

“BELLA COOLA: THE RAINFOREST BROUGHT THEM HOME”

A novel set in the lush British Columbia rainforest, with a compelling storyline: the Bella Coola find themselves straddling several competing worlds: Native American and Euro-American, material and spiritual, past and future, when opposing the imminent destruction of their ancient and sacred valley, in a world where spirit and greed face off for control.http://www.earldjames.com/news.html
