star SHAPING THE TRUE STORY INTO A SCREENPLAY
Presenter: Candace Kearns Read
Friday, September 16, 11:00AM-1:00PM, Old Main Theater/CU Campus

Anyone who has ever tried to write a screenplay based on a true story knows that it is hard to achieve enough distance from what really happened to find the deeper truth of that experience and shape it into an entertaining script. The goal of the “Shaping the True Story Into a Screenplay” workshop is to empower screenwriters who are spurred on by personal experience, or who know of a true story they’d like to tell, and help them make the leap from mere novelistic expression to true cinematic storytelling. With an encouraging and supportive approach, Candace Kearns Read guides attendees toward objectivity about their experience. She details the process of writing the screenplay in terms of cinematic story, antagonist and protagonist, beginning, middle and end, dramatic conflict and character motivations. She will also briefly evaluate each attendee’s proposed true story, if you have one to bring to the workshop.

Candace Kearns Read, MFA, has over twenty years of experience in the film industry as a screenwriter, screenwriting teacher and consultant, and provides an in-depth look at the specific challenges of adapting from true story, based on her experience in the film business. Ms. Read will have copies of her guidebook, “Shaping True Story into Screenplay” available for purchase, and she is available for private consultations during the film festival.

star FIRST IMPRESSIONS: TITLES & LOGLINES
Presenter: Elizabeth English
Friday 1:00-3:00 PM, Old Main Theater/CU Campus

“You’ve got 3 minutes; pitch me what you’ve got.” That's what the entertainment industry movers & shakers who buy projects will tell you. But to get that meeting or a reply to your query letter, and you must first have a very interesting title and logline to catch their eye, whether it’s a screenplay, a novel or a film. Ms. English has developed a method for finding that great, eye-catching title, often within the screenplay text. She'll show you how to write a sizzling short logline to go with it. You'll leave this interactive workshop knowing how to do it yourself, how to “dress” your script or film for success and “Sell the sizzle; not just the steak!” to agents, directors, producers, grants organizations, book publishers and/or Hollywood movie studios.

Ms. English is the founder, executive director and artistic director for the Moondance International Film Festival, now in its 12th fabulous season. She’s also a professional screenwriter, with some 35 completed feature screenplays, 3 TV pilots, 2 produced original stageplays, produced libretto/operas, and presents workshops on successful screenwriting at Moondance, and elsewhere. English also writes published columns and articles on screenwriting, as well as writes for and edits the Moondance E-Zine. She has co-produced & co-directed 3 short films from her screenplays, one of which has won many film festival awards in the US & Europe, and was screened during the Cannes film festival. Please check out her screenplay & film evaluation & editing service at www.mermaid7seas.com.

I went to Pitchfest in LA last weekend and pitched my screenplay. Four producers want to read the screenplay. I noticed that as soon as I mentioned it was a finalist at Moondance, the immediate response was, "Send it to me." Thank you so much for letting me "name-drop" like that. What a world of difference it has made in creating instant interest in my screenplay!
